been trying to figure out this noise plus another.

1. whines under power, remove foot from accelerator and whine stops.
2. CLUNK when shifting into drive or reverse. it is violent enough to actually make the truck jump a bit.

haven't lifted truck off ground yet to test drive shaft, maybe tomorrow. but with all 4 wheels on the ground it is very solid.

I am hoping they are related. but maybe I don't want that either.

where to start?

In two wheel drive, front hubs disengaged, grab differential input yoke and try and wiggle it up and down, side to side.
Then, try and turn the yoke, if all is tight there, then check them slip yokes for slop, if Yours has slip yokes.
Jack one wheel off the ground, transmission in park. try turning the one wheel that is on the ground, one direction then the next. Watch the input yoke at the same time, see how far You have to turn a tire before it makes the yoke move.

Similar issues to my own truck. I'd say the rear end is going out. I checked my ujoints and they are in good shape. I luckily have access to a parts truck with the same rear that's in good shape.

Does the whine completely stop or just change tones?

You guys think the clunking into gear is from the rear end going ?

I figure mines gonna blow up one of these days just from being so high mileage and two broken axles along the way, and my trucks been doing the same thing more and more lately and I just finished redoing the carb so ive been hammering it up and down the street to get it set up right, now it seems to really make a good clunk when putting it into gear, but ive been messing with the TV cable too with a new bracket so I wasnt sure if maybe it was just off a little bit with the TV setup, although im not sure how that would make it clunk going into gear ?

And I just put new u joints in the other day so its not u joints

Ive had a 86 k10 700r4 in my family since brand new, and my father told me it clunked into gear since the day he got it

but on a serious note, first check your fluid, low trans fluid will cause hard shifts
-if your trans fluid is nasty dark color replace it with new fluid and filter
-also your TV cable could be not adjusted properly
-how long has it been clunking like this for?

Might be a typo in there, try turning the wheel that is off the ground, right?

It looks like they are slip yokes

If I see slop anywhere, what well that mean? Qq

hey, how much fluid is supposed to be in the transfer case?

I have a 208 for sure, the id plate is still there! but i can see it is leaking. just fill to the bottom of the fill hole?

edit: 5qts. drained out only about 1.5qts.....

clunk still there, sounds almost like a ringing bell and the truck will actually jump.

Yes fill to the top of the top fill plug. you should fill it up drive around and do it again.

Mine leaks from the slip yoke seal back along the tail housing down the main body of the transfer case to the bottom drain plug and then onto my driveway lol, gotta fix that one of these days.

If theres excess backlash between your 2 gears, it will clunk going into gear. Mine does this and its not really hurting anything unless your those that floor it as your putting it into gear and neutral drop.

But I guess I have enough power i don't have to be like them XD.
