I think it was some sort of Olds engine with a 2brrl sitting on top

It was sitting in a 1980 regular cab long bed square body though!

Guy wanted $500 for the entire thing

Looked like someone used the truck as a dumpster though
Ahh, I know what that was. An Olds 403. The biggest Olds small block with weak windowed main caps and siamese cylinders just like SBC 400 has. I try to avoid those motors. All of them are windowed mains and you have to use a main cap girdle if intend any kind of real horsepower or RPM. You did the right thing passing on that one. I'm not afraid to run a 403, but it wouldn't have been a good choice for you build. I'd do it in squarebody though, but not at no $500. More like $250 if it ran and could be dropped in and used for a few years.

I've never seen an LS1 look like that. I didn't even know they had a provision for a dizzy. I like the fact the dizzy is up front. (Wheels are turning in my head now)

So does the LS1 then even use and OBD ll computer system or is it its own animal? I would have assumed it had a computer just like any other GM vehicle.

I think the ls had computers if they were stock but they got the dizzy kits for them and the carb'd intakes now too, seen em on horsepower tv. I aint big on ls stuff, don't know hardly anything about em, don't like em that much since I don't know much about em. I know they make good power though, just way expensive and parts are sky high too.

I think you're right about parts being high etc. I'll probably stick to my old school stuff, like the Olds 455's and SBC's. I'd still like to do a Vortec computer conversion to a square. Those are fairly reasonable now if you find a donor truck to do it with. Thing about the vortec though, they are pretty much maxed out as far as performance and very few aftermarkets parts to do any hi po stuff to them. Still, the 290 hp out of a 96-98 350 and should be better on fuel being a roller motor. Id like to do it one of the 4x4's since at steep angles you really mess up the engine running being the whole carb and float bowl adjustment thing. I know plenty about the old school stuff, but still want to learn the new school stuff. I know enough to get by, and that's about it.

I like the old iron stuff too and would like a set of vrtec's to throw on top of dad's 84 to bump up the cr and performance over the 72 or 76 cc 2.02 heads he has with dished pistons.

Yeah LS1's were OBD-2 multiport injected stock

Dizzy and carb intakes came later on when they became the most popular engine to swap into anything

that's what they call lsx now aint it dizzy and carb'd or something like that?

I would agree they are good, being lighter, and they make a good amount of power stock.
