Yeah well, I'm prolly guilty of that myself. I've gotten some smoookin' deals before and I came here and posted up about them. Not to rub it in, but just to say I scored !!! There's deals out there, just gotta keep your ears to the tracks and be ready when they show up.

I'd use the th350.

Getting the 205 setup for the th400 is expensive. You need the adapter, the input, the larger bearing to match and the case also needs machined to accept the larger bearing.

Agreed, keep it simple, the TH350 is plenty durable for most.

Well in the end I ended up scoring a th400 and np205 for $300. It was all a match from a 1 ton. Everything looks good except I'm missing the shaft that drives the Speedo cable. Was told the np203 one might work tho. So now I've got both transmissions! Oh the dilemmas I face.

Ooh a 27 spline 205... hard to find out west. Everybody was ordering 4 speeds back then. I like those 27 spline 205s... behind a decent 700.
I would but that tc from in a pinch... if you weren't 3000ks east.

Your 350 I agree with the guys will be fine for some light towing. Get a good tranny cooler installed and a Transgo shift kit. You don;t want the tranny slipping between shift. Bang get it over with.

There is technically no such thing as a decent 700R4 until it became a 4l60E, lol

Ehhh, I'll disagree with that. All depends on who you have you build it. If you get a latter one as in an 88-93, they're much better than 86 on down. But then with a few mods and updates you can make one just as good as any 4L60-E. Through the tunnel, some improved 4L60-E updates will retrofit back to the 700r4. You handle the sunshell issue, the 2/4 band burning up issues, the 3/4 clutch pack issue with a couple of nice servos and a Transgo Jr correction kit you can have a decent, not a good, but a decent 700r4. There's several other mods too you can do too make them a bit stronger, like sleeving the input shaft, hardened shafts, billet servos, and a couple valve upgrades to make them even better to where you consider one a good one.

I'd say by the time you "spend the money" to fix all the things wrong with a 700R4 it's easier to move on a 4l80E or 4l65E, if you really want that lower first gear.

4L65-E is just a glorified 4L60-E with things like a 5 pinion planet instead of 4. Nothing to be impressed about. But, you're right about the upgrades and moving onto a 4L80-E. By the time you build 2 700r4's beefed up, you could have upgraded to a 4L80-E and bought the stand alone controller too and be done with it for years and have plenty of dependability. But people don't see I spend $1400-$1800 now for a 700r4 build, then I'm going to be doing it again in about 18 months again depending on how often they drive it and what goes wrong. Alot of these shops say, Ohhh yeah we uprade them. They put in a vette servo and maybe a hardened sunshell from China and then wonder it goes **** up after towing a small boat to the lake for a couple summers.
