A 4L80E, is absolutely the way to go with a LS engine that can control it natively anyway.
But when you get into carbed engines, the added cost of a controller starts to push a 80 pretty high, to where a 700 may be considered.
Then go to a 4x4, where now you need a new input or case, new driveshafts, monkey around with VSS, etc etc. Now it's alot more attractive to stick to the architecture the factory gave us.
There's alot of factors to take into consideration in this.
