I think cables would have been a wise addition, as traction is key. Yes, the weight helps, but the cables help without the weight. I'd say chains, but with your lowrider, low profile cables would be the only thing to put on the rear tires.
For sure, if I'd thought there was a serious chance I'd need to get out, I would've ordered some. But thankfully we only get this once every 2-5 years and this truck typically stays parked when we do. I've never really thought about it since we rarely get this weather but chains or cables probably wouldn't be a bad thing to order to keep on hand for the Z71 just in case
A few years ago we traveled to my home area, and decided to go up higher in elevation to stay a couple of days in a different town. Before leaving I almost bought some cables for the Forester, but, it being a Forester and having good tires I didn't. We got up there, and I could have gambled with it being a Forester, but the Changeable Message Signs were all saying chains required. Stopped in to a local auto parts store, and $120 later, had a set of cables for the car. The roads were clear...lol... Had I bought them locally before leaving it would have cost $40. But now we have them, and when we travel to the mountains during the wintertime those are loaded in the car just in case. Even have a set for the Cherokee and it has snow rated tires on it.
