I'd need to know the specs on your engine, cam, gear ratio, tire size, usage, before I could really get into pro's and cons of each converter.

Engine is bone stock. Stock cam, stock intake, stock carb.
May go to an "RV" cam and a performer intake next year. I don't know stock cam specs unfortunately.

Gears are 4.10s.

Running 235/85R16 31.7" tires.

Mostly a daily driver, although I want to be able to tow if necessary.

You can also buy dual pattern torque converters too.

Ok. You are the second person to say that. I guess I'll stick with the stock 3-bolt converter @ 1200-1400. Easy peasy.

Hope you didn't mean you would re-use your existing converter. Could be all kind of junk in it.:eek:

Have you looked at Hughes? I'd consider their GM4Tow. I had a GM11Tow (TH350 version) behind a 383 in a Chevy pickup years ago, and now its behind a 355 in my son's truck. That thing's gotta be 10-12 years old. Seems like a very stout piece to me. Here's a description:

"Our severe duty performance converter used in many late model trucks, crew cabs, 4×4’s and motor homes will increase bottom end pulling power without sacrificing top end efficiency or lock-up. Mileage is increased by as much as 1-2 miles per gallon. Recommended for slightly modified engines."

BTW, any advertised stall numbers will probably be higher behind a big block with stock cam.

No, no, no! I meant a stock REPLACEMENT. lol. After what I found in that pan I'm gonna clean every single part of that trans.

I ended up going with a Dacco reman oem unit. Stock 1200-1400 stall. Should be here today actually. RockAuto had it for about $60 shipped after a core return.

I also went with transmissionpartsusa.com for the rebuild kit. They have not shipped yet though...

Got a new flexplate, TC bolts, shift kit, and a Hayden cooler off of Summit. That should be here tomorrow or Monday.

I'm hoping to have the trans out and start the rebuild tomorrow. Should be VERY interesting!

That's what I'd do. IIRC, Stock stall is 1400-1600. A Stock High Stall is 1800ish. I could be wrong too, been awhile since I looked through the Converter catalog.

That's what I'd do. IIRC, Stock stall is 1400-1600. A Stock High Stall is 1800ish. I could be wrong too, been awhile since I looked through the Converter catalog.
Or get a low stall, makes it feel like you have a bunch more torque on take off, lol..

I don't like low stall for the reason of forward learch. You have any kind of cam at all and idle a bit high, you'll feel it trying to take off while sitting at a red light.

I don't like low stall for the reason of forward learch. You have any kind of cam at all and idle a bit high, you'll feel it trying to take off while sitting at a red light.
Low stalls are made for bottom end torque only, and with an all torque cam you can idle at 800 if you want and you won't know the difference, use it with lopey cam and it'll be a total dud off idle. Low stalls are awesome for launch/retrieving a boat and on slippery surfaces on hills, there's no torque multiplication to break the tires loose before you even start to move.
