I've used that kit a few times it's a good one, it does have the yoke o-ring, and last two I got had the black fibre type gasket..

You talking about the ebay kit? I didn't think I'd actually find someone who had actually used one! So it seemed like a good kit? Seems like the price is right in the "about right" ballpark.

Yep, I've used the 400 and 350 kits, and it is a good price for what you get, they're also good to deal with too.

OK...

There are no special tools to rebuild a TH400, the only thing's you may not have are good quality snap ring pliers.

Red Alto clutches suck it, get Raybestos or Borg Warners. They cram more Altos in by making each one thinner, not the way to go. Also they are smooth, not waffled like stock.

When I had my shop, I bought everything from WITrans.com or Transtar. If going the Ebay route, Oregon Performance or something like that, offer's quality stuff in decently priced kits.

Correct, No special tools needed. Just don't forget you'll need a 12pt 3/8 drive socket for the center support bolt under the valve body. Many times a guy only has a 6pt 3/8's. Don't let it scare you. I get calls from people telling me they need a reverse torx special socket. No you don't it's just a common 12pt 3/8.

Agreed to on the clutches. Although, I don't mind the waffled clutches if you can get them in the Raysbestos or Borg Warner. Don't want the Kolene Steels either. Keep in mind, most of the performance clutches and Kolene coated steels are for real race cars that are intended to be torn down and refreshed after so many passes. Yes they may clamp and hold better, but they wear out faster too. For your daily driver, just go with the standard clutches as suggested and waffled does allow more fluid and cooling between the clutches and steels. I've never seen waffled clutches fail prematurely and lasted just fine.

I've ordered many kits from these guys. With the cheap prices I was hesitant so I tried 1 kit. Liked it, good quality. Next time I ordered 2 kits for different model transmissions. Like them too. Good clutches, Raysbestos or Borg Warner every time. Trans Tec or Precision International Seal kits. I've been extremely impressed with the quality for the price and fairly quick shipping from FL to OKC.

Add your bushings, bands and filters you need and compare the price to that ebay kit. This is a Waffled Clutch Kit with Steels for $120.00.

I prefer the waffled, if I wasn't clear. The completely smooth surface is one of the reasons I don't like the Alto clutches. The other is that they are thinner.

I bought a lot of stuff from them for higher end builds, they'll substitute parts too for custom applications.

Ok, just to be clear - I've never dug into a transmission before. So bear with me...

Looking at transmissionpartsUSA, this is what I am thinking:

46001HD TH400 Transmission heavy duty master rebuild kit - $119.74

46995HP TH400 4L80E Kevlar lined front band. - $11.52

46999A TH400 4L80E Transmission high energy reverse band. - $20.16

47886 TH350 TH400 transmission vacuum modulator (red stripe) 1969-86 - $13.98

46922 TH400 Transmission brass screen 1968-on. - $4.20

46330D TH400 transmission governor screen - $0.88

46670 TH400 TH425 Transmission thrust washer kit - $19.75

46954 TH400 Accumulator piston 1964-on(with Teflon sealing ring) - $3.29

46601 TH400 Transmission bushing kit 1966-on - $23.00

After a 15% off code, the total comes to $184.00

Is that EVERYTHING I would need to do the job? Too much? Do I need the bushing kit? Do I need a torrington bearing kit?

I'm obviously just looking to get the truck running again, and the options for these kits seem to be endless and I'm getting very confused. I don't need any kind of major performance upgrades, just a good stock rebuild.

I will likely install a shift kit too though. If anything it will make the trans last longer.

It is a good thing it is not one of the later ones with the o/d, those are very expensive to rebuild.
I was surprised many years ago at how cheap(relatively speaking) it is to overhaul a th350 or 400

That should cover you, unless you have some unforseen hard parts failure.

I’d leave the overpriced B&M **** right where it is but that’s me.
I agree. The B&M Shift Improver kit is junk. Nothing but a crude way to increase line pressure for VERY hard shifts that pound the drivetrain. The TransGo 350-1-2 kit is light years better, which is why it has been used by rebuild shops for at least 35 years to reduce clutch wear and "come backs". It also includes detailed instructions with good pictures. But unless you want super-firm shifts, do just the Level 1 mods, which will give you firmer shifts than stock, but not harsh.
