Well I start it, idles like crap. Hit the throttle once and it idles fine. Kill it, start it right back up and it idles like crap again until I hit the gas. Runs fine down the road, just has a little catch in the throttle. Not sure if it has to do with the modded bracket or if my butterflies are catching the intake now that I took off the thick gasket.

Try moving the throttle by hand to see if it operates properly

It seems to move fine by hand. My bracket sits lower than the carb linkage, so I imagine that's the problem. I just need to pick up a new bracket next time I go to town. I will probably pick up another thick gasket while I'm there, as well as a vac gauge so I can set the screws properly.

Well it ran yesterday, but no dice today. Can't get it to idle. The idle speed kind of surges up and down until it finally dies.

Our just wait until you get that other gasket. Have you made sure by testing that you have no other vacuum leaks?. Put thread sealer on the threads of that screw you put in the blind screw hole

I'm going to buy a new gasket today before I mess with it anymore, as well as a new intake gasket and valve cover gaskets. There are 2 other threaded holes in the intake that don't have bolts in them, but they never have. I will find bolts for those as well.

I'm going to put a timing light on it monday. It could be off.

You think my vac advance could be shot? How would I test that?

Maybe a timing light wile it is running with a vacuum test pump or just plugging it into vacuum and off to see the change.

It started backfiring out the carb while trying to get it to run today. Last time it acted like this the dizzy cap was shot. That was just 150 miles ago.

Unplug the vac advance for right now till you get this idle issue figured. Start with that new thick gasket.
