I believe it melted the boot in the inside. Started the truck up and it's got a miss now. Also once again won't idle and backfires out the tailpipe instead of the intake now. I just want to drive the damn truck!

The melted boot is due to the loose connection to the spark plug. Go through all your boots and crimp the the connector for the plug. Making sure it snaps on the plug when installed. Start there bud. That's where your miss and back fire are coming from, also the running rich you described b4. Those ngk plugs don't run rich.

I bought a $50 set of hi temp wires today that I will put on tomorrow. I also noticed big black spots of soot in my driveway from the exhaust. I assume that's from all the gas that was getting dumped down the intake when the carb float was stuck.

Fire it up after the new wires are on and see if there's any difference

I will give it a go. One of these days I'm going to get tired of this and just big block it like I wanted to to start with.

If I could find a decent priced block I could start building it. Might take me a year or 2, but time is about the only thing I have. By that I mean I could start collecting parts and have somebody else build it.

I see deals all the time for old 80's motorhomes with 454's and Th400s for pretty damn cheap. **** like $800-$1000. And many of those have a Gear Vendor in them, and the Th400's are straight cut plantetaries too. Noisy as hell but stronger than the normal curve cut planets. Many of those motorhomes are low mileage too like 60,000-80,000 and they've sat a long time. You can revive one of those motors pretty easy and cheaply. Pull it and reseal it including valve seals and call it good to go. Install it and go.

I saw one in OKC on Craigslist last week. I will check that out, but don't have a use for the th400. I don't want to give up my 4 speed.

You can always sell the Th400 core transmission. It should bring a $100 as a rebuildable core to someone who needs it bad enough. I just bought 1 gaurenteed to work for $100 w converter. Fluid is pretty as can be.

I'm going to swap the plug wires out tomorrow and if that doesn't fix it I will get a whole new dizzy for it. There couldn't be anything left that would cause this now that we're sure it wasn't plugs, carb or vacuum related. I just don't get why it would happen as soon as I swapped carbs. 2 months of messing with this is enough.

Well I got the new wires on with absolutely no change. Still no idle and backfiring out both ends

This **** is getting old. Once again, if I can get the fast idle to kick in it will idle fine at about 1200-1500rpm, but once it kicks in it gradually increases to about 2000 over a 5 minute period, then when I hit the gas to kick it down it chokes out and dies. Have adjusted idle mix from 1.5 to 2.5 turns out, doesn't seem to make a difference.
