Engine Backfire Diagnosis Led to Wiped cam Lobes

Mark guided me to Cliff Ruggles for parts to do my own rebuild, and offered to build mine specific to my current setup. I wanted to use the rebuild as a learning experience so I did my own.

The info Mark sent me for him to rebuild had reasonable prices too. Mark has a quicker turnaround than Cliff for a rebuild.

Thank you Mark for guiding me in the right direction, because I was going to get a crappy kit from the parts store. With the kits (2 carbs rebuilt) I got from Cliff and suggestions from him to do to my carb on the truck, and the literature (Cliff Ruggles book, Doug Roe book, and factory manuals specific to my carbs) I purchased to learn about the Rochester Quadrajet, it was a fun experience for me. I now better understand these 80's non-computer-controlled carbs. I can see their potential for good performance.

Truck yea! The beast lives again. Still have some rough idle if I kill it and restart it, and I get some bog and a backfire if I punch it, but I think a lot of that can be solved with a timing light and a vac gauge. Also discovered my battery is shot.

I say it's a timing issue now. Sounds like it's firing while the intake valve is open.

Got the timing set. Idles fine at the moment, but I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Had a black puddle on the exhaust manifold and on the back left spark plug boot, but can't tell where it's coming from. Could be that the boot melted but it's not touching the manifold so idk. I have to let it cool down before I can investigate.

I had it to 14* at one time but backed it off to 12*

Yea it was like 6-8*. I need to drive it to make sure it doesn't ping but I need to get this smoking issue fixed before I do something stupid. It runs hotter now that I fixed the timing.
Hasn't gotten too hot yet but I also have t driven it. I need to put the bottom half of the shroud on but I can't until I take the body lift off.
Always something.
