having issues finding out how much drop between filler and tank. Finally found a few by googling "minimum drop for fuel filler". Yes it's by Ford but I'm sure the theory is the same regardless. Looks like 4° is the minimum. They do mention increasing the size of the vent helping as well.

put in height and length to figure out angle:

Example: A 36" run from the tail light to the center of the bed will require just over 2.5" drop to get the 4°'s needed.

When I filled mine for the first time it took the fuel fine but when it got full it was like a geyser there for a second lol freaked me out, lost a good cup or two of gas. I should probably look into the pitch I have.

I think the pitch is so it would take it. Do you have the vent line on the filler tube or is it located elsewhere? The size of that tube in either location appears to have an affect on what your describing. Maybe you need a smaller tube to cause it to push back a bit on the inlet to cause it to trip? Guessing there. If you don't care share what size vent hose you have and where it's located. If separate of the filler neck, how far above/below tank it is.

There's a damn science to this......just not discussed much.

The vent line is 5/8", same size as what was stock on the saddlebag tank. The vent line ties in to the filler neck really high on the neck, which was different than the stock filler for the saddlebag tank so I thought it would be better higher up. It's literally within an inch of the cap. I guess it's possible gas shot up the vent but hard to tell. The filler neck already had the flap ripped out of it before I got my claws on it. I think there may be a point where the vent line drops below the level of the filler tube that runs behind the rear wheel well but I wouldn't think that would have an effect on it.

Been reading this thread and thinking about a Blazer tank in my short bed. Found a tank with skid plate at the pick a part now just need to figure out the filler. Does anyone have any pics of how they did their filler on a stepside?

I don't think anyone has addressed it with a stepside yet. It's been on my list of things to figure out, just haven't got to that point in the project yet.

Looked through the whole thread and only saw smooth sides. Don't think I missed any stepsides.

I've never liked the fuel tanks on SBs. This thread has me wondering if the 30 gallon rear tank from my 89 van might fit the 87 R30. I'll at least do some measuring.

jump on rockauto and compare the part #'s from a burb of the same year to your vans. If the part #'s are the same.....there you go.

hey honky kong jr what are the dimensions to locate your filler neck door. I really like how you set that up and would like to do that on my truck.
