Something else? Assuming we stay chevy here, I know the 6BT is a common one, but never came stock in a chevy.[/QUOTE]

I know at least in 1987 you could order a GMC/Chevy truck from the GM dealer with a Cummins 4 or 6 .
I still have some of the paperwork from my Chevy dealer.

I’ve owned a 83,84,85, and 86 cucv. I’m pretty sure 83 was the rare of the years

There were some 1987's also.

Too bad GM couldn't provide a reliable engine for those trucks. There were literally thousands of them auctioned off at Government Liquidations with very low mileage on them. My 86 M1031 had 27,000 miles on it and appeared hardly used.

I wouldn’t use the word unreliable. The 6.2 was very reliable just very slow.

I believe in 1983 the CUCV was commissioned and GM began producing the 1984 model year in 83. Because it was the 1984MY that was commissioned they made the exact same 1984 CUCV from 1983 until 1987.
Interesting about the 87 Cummins, that's the first I had ever heard of that!
As for engine swaps, the LQ4 won. Now what to do to it before swapping...

They weren't even that slow when you take them in the context of the time. None of the engine options made great power except the big block. I'd put mine up against any stock powerplant of the time. Hot-rodding OTOH,... they're not hot-roddable like a gas engine is.
