Ahhhh and oh wait a minute, also some Buicks and Olds etc etc. Isn't that what GM got sued over, putting Chevy motors in other brands. I beleive that's when all that started, that GM started going to GM motors instead of branded motors, but there was a class action lawsuit over that and now why they are called GM motors.

hmm intresting they both have the same casting numbers but if you look at orillys they have different part numbers. i was always told they were the same journals and stroke damn now I really wondering what the difference is

yeah me too. That's why I asked. Who knows??? I am very cautious selecting cranks for 350 now. I want to make sure its a 350 crank and not a 305. But I never been told the difference and why. And I wanna know dammit.

Without seeing a 305 and a 350 crank side by side and checking part numbers, I can't tell...

yes, I know that's what the etc etc was for. It was basically used in all GM brands eventually. The Olds 350 and 307 was used in several brands too, as was the Buick 231 V6.

ok here ya go

Crank class 101. Ok class if you really want to step on your ********!!! Go to the crank rack and pull down a crank out of a chev 267 cu-inch. Cast# 442 same as 350. Put that in your fresh 350 and call me in the morning with the results. G-M cast and marked all the 3.48 stroke cranks with 2 piece main seal all the same. Balance was different for bore size and weight of pistons used per cubic inch. Class dissmissed>>>>.

The differences were balancing but some people say they have interchanged them and never had any problem in a street vehcle

But, as I also said, one way to be sure, if its balancing is the issue. I like to get motors that I build balanced anyway. So take the whole rotating assembly to the machine shop, get your crank, rods and pistons balanced and you should be good. IF extrenal balanced, then they need your flywheel and harmonic balancer too.

OK, I was thinking probably 78, but 77 sounds right too. Seems Camaro and Impalla might have been the first to get them.

Speaking Impala's. Do you guys remember rare true 409 in the Impala's with the 2 carbs mounted on the intake?

1961-65 were the years the 409 was offered. There was also a truck version and I think it was offered up to 1966. Based on the 348 offered in cars 1958-61 and trucks 1956-61. There was also a 427 built for racing based on the W motor.

Any 1961-65 Impala, Bel-Air or Biscayne could get a 409.
