How many species of snakes live in Virginia?​

There are 32 species of snake in Virginia, but only three are venomous (Cottonmouth, Copperhead and Timber Rattlesnake). Of these, only the Copperhead and Timber Rattlesnake occur in Southwest Virginia. Cottonmouths (aka water-moccasins) are primarily found in southeastern Virginia. Some of the more commonly encountered harmless (nonvenomous) snakes in Southwest Virginia include the Eastern Milksnake, Northern Ring-necked Snake, Eastern Ratsnake (aka Blacksnake), Black Racer, and Northern Watersnake, which is often misidentified as a Cottonmouth.
Your search and post are accurate. This was a racer or possibly a King snake skin. I've been seeing a King snake around the garden this year. I leave them alone as they are good at keeping other harmful snakes away.

Here's a good example of a Timber rattler came up on a few years ago not at my house but at a family farm south of me in NC, but we have them right here as well. Apologies to those who hate snakes....I get it, the creepiness of them is a real thing. They used to wig me out but I've learned they have their place. I've killed plenty of Copperheads and some Cottonmouths over the years, nearly stepped on one Cottonmouth. The only reason I didn't get struck by it I think is because it was early morning and cold.

I wont deviate from the theme of the thread anymore, so I did this yesterday to my square. I really like that VHT rattle can paint. It flows well and I've used it on some Honda ATC rims that turned out nice IMO.

Got my new drag link parts in last night and a new steering stablizer. The steering is now like a brand new truck... 100000% better. Between redhead being just north of me and summit having the stabilizer and drag link parts, I think it ended up being about $500 and only a day wait on parts. Redhead had the steering gear at my door next day and same thing with summit, since they had the ACdelco ends and the Moog center sleeve in stock. I went with a skyjacker HD single steering stabilizer since I have 35's.

Another snag in the starter replacement. I know generally the same starter fits a bbc and the sbc. Not this one though. The bolts do t line up the same. The starter on the 82 454 is the one pulled from the previous 305 that was on it. The 84 305 is totally different. I noticed that one bolt was shorter by a lot than the other one.

Went to advanced yesterday to pick up the new one. Wasn't even close. So I told her to refund my card and I go to O'Reilly and get one. They had to order it. So I'll check it out today after work.

The one on the bottom is off the 84 305 and the other is for the 82 454. It's the same as the one on there now from the 305. I just kept the new one In case it goes out. See the difference. Ugh!

I like how you molded the cardboard to fit the angle of the intake. :)

The difference is that one of those is for the 168 tooth flywheel and the other one is for the 153 tooth one. Either could be on a Small block. You will almost always have the 168 tooth on the BBC. Most blocks(both BBC and SBC) will have the bolt holes for either one, but you need to make sure you get the right starter for the flywheel you have installed. The straight across one is for the small 153 tooth flywheel, the staggered pattern is for the 168 tooth and is what you will find on almost all SBC/BBC, especially in trucks.

How do I tell which flywheel I have? I'm guessing it's the stock one. I'm sure if I tell them I need the 153 tooth flywheel one, that will confuse them. Lol

How do I tell which flywheel I have? I'm guessing it's the stock one. I'm sure if I tell them I need the 153 tooth flywheel one, that will confuse them. Lol
Which one came off the truck and worked? The straight across one puts the shaft closer to the flywheel(for the smaller 153 tooth flywheel). The staggered bolt pattern puts the shaft further away from the centerline to clear the 168 tooth flywheel. I know that my 1980 K25 350 has the 168 tooth flywheel and the small, high-torque, starter from the 97 K2500 454 bolted right up and interfaced great.

Also, for my stock starter, I just got a rebuild kit from napa and pulled the old one apart. I cleaned it, replaced the brushes and the bushings, and threw it back together. At the same time it is prudent to take apart the solenoid and inspect the round stud portion that rides on the shaft during a start. Those tend to wear out and you can refresh the life of the starter by pulling the bolt out and flipping it over so the other half rides on the round disk. I think I got a kit like this, but it was only like $20 when I got it.

You can also just get a kit on ebay with all the things:

Thanks for this! I was thinking of having someone rebuild it if I can't get the right one from the parts houses. We used to have a shop that rebuilt starters and alternators. Don't know if they are still there.

Took care of another patch and the inner support panel this morning. Next, the two drivers side panels. The sun has made its way to shining on me so I am going to do something else.

You're right about the bolt holes being there for both. I went and got another long bolt and will see what happens. Hope it works because O'Reilly gave me the wrong one.

Hello 82sbshortbed! I hope all is well.

I just wanted to comment that a rebuilding your starter is not a hard or complex operation.

I have done it before and if I can do it I believe you can too. It is just a bench top job. If you have a compressor to blow everything out and remove and replace the brushes.
Remove and replace the parts on the solenoid is the same.
