Hi,
So i had my truck in 4 low pulling a buddy out last night, and it would tick/whir when i drove through the trail (Was going like 5 miles an hour or slower). I assumed it was because i wasnt just crawling along with it.
I put it in 4 high, and it would do it then. It sound kind of like a chain going around and around constant with how fast i was going.
To help describe it bettwe, it sounds not like grinding but a constant tick tick tick

I have a NP208, coming off a 700r4. Auto locking hubs, that i have manual replacements for just havent put them in

What would this be?

Thanks!

Where did it sound like the tick was coming from? Under the seats or under the front of the truck?

Right about where the shifter for the 4 wheel drive is, right around there, so im assuming its coming from the transfer case

before condemning the T~Case, remove the drive shafts and check the U~Joints first.
Being just a guess here.
Block the wheels securely first though.
Do not install locking hubs, that will destroy that 208 T~Case.

Chain stretch? If you roll a window down does it sound like the chain is rubbing? http://youtu.be/cBL7_b_C3r8

If so, quit using 4wd and rebuild it before you wear a hole in your case

Might be able to get by with new chain, of you need sprockets/gears, might want to look into a new used tcase

if you indeed narrow it down to your transfer case, I would start by inspecting the fluid, also pull the tail housing and check out the output bearing and bushing

What do you mean? The 208 is supposed to have locking hubs.

Kind of, thats the same kind of sound im hearing for the most part

Rear u joint is newer, replaced about 2k miles ago

And, i know the hubs are certainly making noise. I put it in 4 for a minute today and driving theres lots of that sound in the video, and when i shifted back to 2H before i backed up to disengage the hubs it would have that tick noise coming from up front, definitely the hubs.

If the chains loose, how will i fix that?

Buy a new chain. Hope your sprockets are good. Might as well get a rebuild kit while you are at it.

Instead of rebuilding mine, i just swapped in a 241c. But i tore it down and rebuilt it first. Had about 300 into it by the time i was done since i didn't need the chain.

Might want to check for used ones 241/208 instead of rebuilding.

241 is essentially the update for the 208. But the only year that works of you want to keep mech speedo is 89. It has a much improved oil system and a few other smaller changes

In behind the front hubs, there are U~Joints that can make ticking and clicking noises too.

You can put locking hubs on a NP203. You will need to get a part time kit or leave the hubs you get in the locked position.
