@Vbb199 will especially like to see this, but I finally got to a point where I could move my old lathe to the workbench. I don't know anything about it or how to use it, so I will be looking to the good folks here for pointers. I need to move a few more things around, then I can actually bolt it down to the bench. I also need to get another light mounted so it's not so dark in that corner.

There's 3 different sized pullies to run the belt on. It's a planetary type hub.

There's a box of assorted sprockets for this end. I seem to be missing whatever it is that keeps the lower driven sprocket engaged to the upper drive sprockets.

Cute little machine. I hope your table is (old school) Chevy tough.

I'm jealous. No I'm not. Envious. No. Damn I'd love to have one of those.

Typically Sears lathes were made by Atlas. There is a ton of information and parts available. The sprockets are to drive the cutter for machining threads. While it is a great help to have the auto feed running, it will still do standard turning my cranking the tool head manually. The link below is a copy of the original manual. Below it is a YouTube link to a guy who has one in good condition. Good luck with it going forward.

Nice bench lathe! I'm a machinist and would love to have that on my bench. The 3 different pullys are to adjust spindle speed or Chuck speed however you want to say it.

Nice lathe! Some of the handiest tools in the world and one that size is beyond helpful in a typical garage shop.

It would take me a week to explain how all that stuff works, but if you have specific questions there's obviously a bunch of machinists here and I'm sure we can help.

My first suggestion, in addition to the lathe manual that kryponitekid posted (and I think he's right, it looks like an Atlas) is to find a copy of How To Run A Lathe published by South Bend. You'll get all he basics of machining from that and you will be amazed at what versatile machines they are. The books date to around the 1940s, so they seem somewhat archaic, but the principles haven't changed in 100 years.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you do with it. Good luck.

That one is a Double-A Products co. the 109.*** prefix is what determines that, an Atlas products would be 101.***.

Two good resources for literature and parts are Vintage Machinery and OWWM (they are sister sites to one another)

Wow, so much info right away!

I kind of know some of the basics about it. I used to know a fella that was a retired machinist, I had actually taken the thing to him so he could see it. He showed me a few things about it and also drew up a basic set of instructions for me. He said he would help me get it set up and walk me through some things when I was ready. Well, I waited far too long and unfortunately, he passed away earlier this year.

I didn't realize it was that critical that the lathe be mounted to a perfectly flat surface. My bench is good and solid, but that may not be good enough. How about a sheet of 1/2 inch plate? I could bolt the plate to the bench and then drill/tap mounting holes for the lathe, into the plate.

I also had no idea it was made in the 40's.
