Yep. 100% correct. In fact, the c clips on the end of the straps were not installed at all. In previous u joint jobs I’ve never needed those because there were other things in place to keep the u joint from walking so didn’t even cross my mind. So this instance seems to be a case of user error on install. I just got back from buying another u joint (all 4 c clips will be installed this time) and new straps.

so, lesson learned for when I do another u joint job 20 years from now

I was going to say it doesn't look like your yoke has the little nubs to keep the caps from slinging out via centrifugal motion. The inner c clips should do the same thing.

New u joint in place (all 4 c clips in place LOL) and I replaced the straps, as well. Almost there. I just need to get the bolts another turn or two tighter on the straps. I need to get the rear end in the air to get more leverage and get them as tight as they should be. Should be back on the road probably by end of day tomorrow as I'm not sure I'll have time to mess with it today.

Ordered a kit to convert the truck to use hood struts vs the hood prop. No real reason other than "just cuz" and seemed like a cool upgrade. Got the kit off eBay. Company looks to be Motocam. Seems to be a pretty solid kit.

Pretty sweet but a wee pricey for me. But ive spent more on less...
Agreed. I’ve seen some DIY solutions that would be substantially cheaper. I didn’t feel like doing that much thinkin’ or engineerin’ so spent on the kit that looked to be of decent quality. Also liked that the struts aren’t real long so it will be nice and compact

Me too! That’ll be very useful
Also wonder if theres a way without that setup to open the hood all the way to the windshield like some vehicles from that age.

Not sure. Would all depend on the hinges themselves at that point

Finally finished getting the new u joint in with all 4 c clips installed. Will give it a quick test drive tomorrow and then Saturday morning I gotta do a bunch of running around so I should feel pretty comfy by the end of that assuming everything goes as planned.
