She runs really well right now. Nice and smooth and exactly how you'd expect it to run. The only small issue is when I turn it off it shuts off kind of rough but I'm wondering if that's a trait of the iron duke or if I have a minor issue afoot. It doesn't diesel or anything like that but just shuts off kind of rough.

Normal 4 cylinder/ inline. Check engine mounts if it really seems excessive.

It’s not what I’d consider excessive. With that said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the motor mounts were original. The only reason I’m not 100% positive is because rumor has it this engine has been out before. Based on everything I’ve seen so far, tho, there’s probably an 82.3% chance that they are original and it wouldn’t hurt anything to throw new ones in if I find myself motivated to do so lol

Well got her on the hwy this morning for the first time. She was smooth for the first .83492 miles then the new u joint popped out. Any ideas on what we might’ve done wrong on the install? Looks to me like the u joint slipped out of the straps then the cap fell out from not being secure :hmm:

I pulled over immediately when I knew something wasn’t right but yes I’m thankful too.

Not sure. I know that we struggled to get those straps to a point where we felt they were tight enough and forming around the u joint. So I’m going to start with another new u joint and new straps and go from there.

the duke isn't known to be a well balanced engine

I think my s10 is gunna need a u joint or carrier bearing shortly. I get a decently loud squeak squeak squeakin when i back up

My hunch is the internal snap ring wasn't seated all the way and popped off. Then the cap was able to work outboard and all hell rapidly broke loose at that point.

Besides the obvious u-joint, replace the straps and bolts too. They just went through a lot of stress that they were not designed to see.

Yep. 100% correct. In fact, the c clips on the end of the straps were not installed at all. In previous u joint jobs I’ve never needed those because there were other things in place to keep the u joint from walking so didn’t even cross my mind. So this instance seems to be a case of user error on install. I just got back from buying another u joint (all 4 c clips will be installed this time) and new straps. :rolleyes:

so, lesson learned for when I do another u joint job 20 years from now :lol:
