Get you one of these. I put a couple of strong rubber bands around it where it grips the spring so it wouldn't come off.

Picked up this tool and ordered some of the umbrella style valve seals this week. Hoping to do this job with my son this winter. Need to pick up a service manual for the blazer so that I know all the torque specs and whatnots

Funny you should say that. Just got around to ordering a service manual on Monday and is supposed to show up tomorrow lol


Oh….and clutch went out on Monday. Supposed to be Saturday afternoon’s project to get it back on the road again

Got the clutch job wrapped up last weekend and he’s been back to driving it this week. She’s better than she was when he bought it so that’s a good thing. I think his next project on the rig is I’ll be helping him replace the valve stem seals that I’ve mentioned and he wants us to put an exhaust on it.

Also, my parents are getting him an exhaust kit with 2.5” pipes on it that has a few bends in it and whatnots so we can kinda make our own system. Should be a find little project. Anyway, that’ll all happen after Christmas

Helping my oldest replace valve stem seals on this 4.3 in his S10 blazer. Using the umbrella seals. Question, do we use the umbrella seals AND the o-ring or just the umbrella seals?

Only been able to hit this job and hour at a time, but finished up drivers side today. Took us about 4 hours between taking valve covers off and replacing the seals. Will start on passenger side tomorrow morning for a couple of hours. Those old seals were rock hard and crumbled as soon as we touched them! Lol We also will have to replace the heater hose that goes into the rear of the block along with the connector. Should be good as new by mid week or so.

Yes. There was an o-ring style on there before. I posted the same question on the KC Squarebody group cuz there are some knowledgeable folks there, too, and was told to just use the umbrella seals and not double up on umbrella and o-ring.

See vacuum line circled in red. Can I replace these with just regular, rubber vacuum hose? Due to age, we’ve had a couple crumble to pieces on us and I’m not finding OEM style replacements

Yeah, reg vac hose will work just fine.

Well, we’re in a real pickle now We got everything together over the weekend, but couldn’t get everything 100% buttoned up until tonight because of waiting on parts to arrive that broke along the way due to 32 year old plastic wonderfulness. First startup, the positive is no oil puff BUT it was missing. Did a compression test and cylinder two was down. Took passenger valve cover back off to redo cylinder 2 rocker arms…….This is when things took a turn because I had to run my other 3 kids all over town for various sports commitments.

I gave the owner of the blazer directions. Once done with the lashing of valves on cylinder 2 to put it back together and we’ll retest later. Also, when torquing down the valve cover it’s ONLY 27 in-lbs. 45 minutes after I leave home i get a text…..he broke the bolt off in the head because he went WAY past the click on the torque wrench. I should just told him to wait til I got back home but I thought he could handle it.

Any suggestions? As you can see, we’ve tried the EZ Out option to exhaustion.

I'd just omit that bolt for now and make sure it runs how it's supposed to. It might not even leak, but there's only one way to find out.
