You're going to have to cut it anyway to make a connection. Your pic with the starter in it makes me think that the red wire is the fusible link and it should be on the starter big terminal that's the one that will be feeding power to the ignition switch. The purple one probably broke off of the S terminal, a small terminal. I'd go ahead and put a ring terminal on that one and it should have power from the ignition switch start position if the ignition switch is getting power from the red one at the starter.
Could the "plastic portion" be the identifier/label showing the value of a fusible link, does it have a number on it?
I'd take a hard look at the 440 circuit (orange wire) in the main harness across the firewall for rub through on the variois brackets (MAP. cruise control, etc). it feeds power to the ECM and fuel pump relay. it won't explain your no crank, but it will create a no start and will kill the truck while driving if it is shorting to ground when going over bumps.I have a 91 Suburban V2500 3/4 ton with 350TBI
I been having a similar issue no crank no start. The battery and alternator are brand new, the starter is still strong. I also put in a new neutral safety switch, ignition module and cleaned all the ground straps and made sure they were tight. When I was driving it shutoff without any warning luckily there wasn't no traffic. I attempt to restart but nothing the headlights, interior lights and warning buzzer all work.
I'm starting to think it could be related to those fusible links and junction box
