i have a 32 spline 208 from a 400 but shipping would be way to much.

you said you could get the 208 from the guy you got the transmission from for 75 bucks if i remember right. i would go to him and offer him 50 bucks for it.

When I realized it wasn't a 27 spline which I have 3 of, I called him back, and he had already sold it. One of our new members just bought a used NP208 32 spline case to replace his that has a broken craked case. He's supposed to get in touch with me after he gets the swap done, and pull the front bearing and input out of it and hopefully shipping for just that part isn't so bad and I can convert one of my 27 splines to 32 and be good to go.

More info on the A833. Maybe it's not as weak as some think. I've seem some claims that makes me think it's fairly strong, like behind big horsepower in an Impala and laid doen rubber forever.
In the 87 GM Service manual, it gives torque ratings for the 3 manaul transmission options. The 3 speed, which is likely the 3 speed on the column model, is rated at 246 ft lb. The A833 is rated at 260 ft lbs. Still sounds a bit weak, but the bullet proof SM465 is only rated at 290 ft lbs. So that just tells me the ratings are grossly under figured. I was hoping to find torque ratings for Muncie M21 and M22 Rockcrusher for comparison in strength but was unable to locate any of that info.

Still in need of clutch pedals, hydro parts, and 32 spline NP208 or round pattern NP205 to make this install.

Hell HR, your not going to drag race or mud bog race you truck, I'm sure the rating on this tranny is way mire than you need to go wheeling.

You've got me all wrong buddy. If I know I've got the strength to tolerate some abuse, you can bet your ass, I will to be drag racing or giving some wheeling hell. I'll assure you. I can and will build a motor to find every last weakest link in a drivetrain. It's all about tearin'em up and rebuilding them stronger. I had a feeling this trans could take some ****, and why I'm interested in finding an NP205 for it. I'd never waste my time looking for an NP205 for a 700r4 knowing the 700r4 would die before a NP208 would, and a NP208 having a deeper crawl ratio will help the 700r4 survive in some cases.

:roflbow: I wouldn't consider myself hardcore. But I do tend to find limits on the toys. Kinda why I was wanting to build a lighter duty 4x4 and a heavier duty 4x4 which could take some hell and may end up what I do. Just build my 2 4x4's and punt the other 2wd projects.

I don't doubt it. I'm the same way and if I can find one of these fun 4 speeds for my Blazer, you can bet your sweet biscuits I'm going to see what it takes to break it.

So to get some cash, I listed one of my 3 NP208's for 700r4/Th350 on CL for $100. A guy come to look at it today, and wasn't sure it was the right one. I assured him it is. He said he has a NP208 but it's the wrong one. It don't look right cuz it's Octagon shape. I'm thinking Th400 and 32 spline the whole time, about to pop wood right there in front of a grown man about to make myself look gay as hell. Then I told him, damn I wish we knew for sure, cuz if you have the one I think it is, I'd swap you and I showed him the A833. He said, NO, that won't fit, you need round and this one is Octagon. I told him, it probably has a Th400 adapter on it, and it if does, that means it's 32 spline, and I take that adapter off and it's what I need. THEN HE SAYS, well I have it with me !!! :manos: We go look and BINGO !!! I said, man, if you don't need that, I'll swap you straight up and let you keep your shift rod and speedo driven gear assembly. He said, OK !!! So that's how it's done. Now I have a Tcase for the NP A833. Filthy dirty outside, but the fluid looks great, the bearings and chain seem tight. I might throw a seal kit in it when I do the A833. So that means, all I need now is clutch linkage as in pedals and hydros and I'll be rocking the 4 speed OD with Hurts Shifter !!!

THIS IS HOW WE DO IT !!! .....

You sure that's gonna work? Just looking at the grimy side behind the adapter it looks like a round 6 bolt pattern. It's definitely 32-spline / fine spline on the adapter. If nothing else you have the input shaft you need now. I hope it's the right one, I wanna see this setup in action!!

Yep, I'm sure it'll work !!! I knew it would. All those ramblings up there for 7 pages, was a whole lotta looking around and diggin for info. This transfer case being dated 12/83, I'm going to assume is out of a CUCV. Wasn't it until after 86 that OEM Th400s started getting NP208's instead of NP205's??? Or am I getting confused with something else again???

If I can gather up some funds, I want to take them both apart, at least reseal the Tcase, and I'd like to go all thru the Trans. inbowhunter has a kit he's making me a deal on, I just gotta get the funds or something to trade him. He sold his truck, so he don't need it anymore. I want to do this so bad, but I want to do it right. I still have to get clutch pedals and hydros too, and I'd like a new clutch. I'm getting the bigger clutch too. Did you know this calls for a 1 inch bigger clutch than the SM465 does??? I'm liking it !!! Just a big step closer today. And I'm still keeping my eyes open for a 32 spline round NP205 too.

It all ran down my leg. I needed a shower anyway. Gonna go do that now !!! Be back later. Gonna go take a shower, play trucks for a while, then go up to the yard and move some cars around and do some paperwork before DOT has my ass.
