I also just realized, Billy's may not be a 4x4 converted unit. If it has the Th350/700r4/M20/M21/Powerglide, as you can tell, very common 27 spline output yoke, it couldn't have been converted. The 4x4 unit gets the 32 spline Th400/Late SM465/M22 Rock Crusher output shaft.

So the way it's looking, the 2wd could be cast or alum. Both of these had the Chevy mount pattern.

Then there was the 4x4 version that was only cast, had the Dodge pattern, and was 32 spline output.

That right?

Well Sumbish !!! Look at this. So your truck is factory 2wd, A883 right??? Notice it came with the 4x4 hump? I see the flange to bolt the NP208 shifter to the hump. Also see the circle for what would be the SM465 opening. Seems all the MY6/MM7 trucks will have a 4x4 hump in them.

EDIT> HELL, and i just noticed it's a bolt on hump. I need to find me one of those. What year is this truck Jeff?

It's my understanding, all the 2wd models were 27 spline. But it was also my understanding that all the 2wd units were aluminum, but Billy obviously has a Cast iron gear box unit with an aluminum tailshaft housing and appears to be a 27 spline yoke too.

Im the second owner,, 1982 c10 6.2L...

i put a 465 in it but didnt want to put the factory 2.73's in it....

the 465 and the 308's were tacking the motor out doing 65.........

so put the my6 back in after rebuilding it then blew up the rear end,, factory 3.08's...

so i have a 72 impalla with the beeeef 3.07 10 bolt and its solid...

chevvy truck really screwed up with there rear end strength......

and yea,, thats the factory trans tunnel.......

the shifter plate is the same? but the bolt pattern is upside down to bolt to the tail shaft,,drilled 2 holes and everything was bolted to the tail shaft..

i had a muncie in it too,, a few times,,,, and they all went south,, they cant take the torque of the diesel and the close ratio pattern on top of it?......

here is somthing else strange? my mom has an 85 f 150,, well my truck really,, but it has a top load NP 4sp overdrive and it will bolt to the funky wide pattern bell housing that your cast iron mm7 bolts to!!!

27 spline out..... uses the same clutch disk as a 6 cyl gm........

Yeah, being it's New Process instead of Ford Corporate, it could be about anything. I wonder how that trans would do in one of our squares. Might be pretty tough.

You're saying Muncie's won't hold up the 6.2? But this A833 does huh??

Thanks for the pics Billy. I have a funny feeling that was originally a 4x4 unit and then someone swapped the 2x4 aluminum tailshaft housing on it. That's exactly that my gear box looks like.

Be back in a minute Jeff, I think I have a pics of the bolt pattern. The cast iron models DO get the Dodge pattern and the Aluminum one get the Chevy pattern the way I understand it, so it does come in 2 different bolt pattern to the bell housing.

Well, I can tell you that is the original transmission that came in the truck. My in-laws bought the truck off the lot with 15 miles on it in late '84.

Strange. Maybe the GM workers were dumbfounded too, so they got marked A833 on them, or maybe that was just the first one, or marked on a pallet. It's cool see markings like that stuff you know is original.

Yeah, I realized it coudln't have been a conversion, cuz it has the 27 spline output shaft and yoke. Someone wouldn't have gone thru that much trouble for just a swap job.

Man... How cool would it be to have a pallet of those transmissions, and you know they'd have the clutch and bell housing assembly with them too.

oh yea,, the my6a833 aluminum trans thats in my truck is the strongest thats been in it,, except for the 465......

the gears,,IMO,, are to thin and to small in diameter in a muncie,, destroys the cluster gear... guess thats why they used the super t-10 behind BBC...Or th400..

but the 10 bolt gm truck rear end with 2.73's is the weak link in a diesel but good mileage.......

my diesel will rev 4500 rpms,, thats when the governor kicks in...

the a833 and 2.73" suck,, ya never ever use OD.....

the 465 and 3.08's/3.07's ya will blow the motor up @ 60....

its like driving around in second gear..........

my 82 surburban,, long gone,, but it was a 6.2 700r4/np208 and 3.42's factory and it hauled ass.. but it needed just one more gear,,5th.......

i know of a few burbans around here that are 6.2L th400/np208 and 3.08's and that seems to be about perfect for gearing/wheelin.... except for the 208 breaking in half........

for diesel,, again,, IMO,, would be th400/205 and 308's with a cable modulator valve for a good DD and towing...

A BBC chevy would do well also with that set up....

my truck 82c10 6.2 my6 a833 and 3.07's gets 28-30 mpg and hauls the mail... thats why i want to fix the the 6.2 so bad,, beats 10-12 in my k10...........

they used to call me Gear head.. LOL..........

I guess I can see this being a Diesel, and Diesels don't care for high rpm, but for a gas motor, I'd say 3.73 or 4.10's with the A833 would be the ideal set up with a 31in tire. Being half ton, I assume you're probably running a 28-29in tire huh?

31x10.5x15's..

my k10 has 31x10.5x15 also and a th350 and 3.73's tacks the motor @3k rpm running 70 mph....it needs over drive so bad.....

but my sbc's live @ 3k rpm and seem to like it,, but the mileage sucks.....

if i could figure out a way to put this my6 in front of my 205 t case? that would be a killer set up,, like 700r4 gearing but stout enough to take the punishment of my sbc........

i wouldnt mind at all doing clutches.............

You're K10 is running identical # as my 85 K1500, Th350,3.73 and 31x10.50-15. Yeah, it tachs a bit @ 70, but as you said, small blocks love it. This is the truck I hope to put my A833 in. I already have a NP208, but you can bet your ass, as soon as I get a Round pattern NP205, it will be installed in place of the NP208.

I really wanted to go the 4.10's, but I think I'm going to leave the A833 truck as my hopefull mpg getter, and other K10, and hope to maybe acquire a K5 Blazer or K20 Burban before I get to the that project, will be the one I do the 14b Full Float w/ Detroit Locker, 10 bolt front w/ ARB Air Locker, Th350/NP205 since I have that already, and run 35's. I'd kinda like to find a Th400/NP205. Getting older, I'm not as fast as I used to be at pulling transmissions and Tcases, so I'd be willing to suffer the disadvantages of the Th400 over the Th350 for the strength.
