Looks like the crossover was leaking and the hot exhaust was cooking the oil.

That is actually BB abuse and OP should have his pattys whacked. lol I had a rattley rocker and out it came and it became what it is. Funny part is it could be a complete turd. Since the redo it's never been in anything but on the run stand. It sounds good and it's snappy we shall see.

If that chunk was all that was there was, I'd run it with a stock 427 or 454 crank, but I'm more concerned about that crack to the right side of the tape measure about the 6 inch mark. And that line going further up the cylinder. It almost appears as if it didn't just shatter that whole cylinder.

Can't tell how deep that big chunk is in the pic, but I'll assure you it's not going to clean up at .010 and I'm not even sure .030 would be enough. Pretty much a scrap crank. And if that crack in the block is anything, you may be right about the heads being the only thing salvageable on that one.
I think I've seen enough, better safe than sorry. Not even sure I'd have any of that magnafluxed and checked. I think I'd just put that short block to rest forever in the scrap yard to make Kia or Nissan someday.

You can save the good rods though. You never know when you do a BBC build, have your rods reconned and need a rod or two if they're found to have a little twist in them at the machine shop. If you do that, just make sure you weigh all your rods and that they weight the same. If they don't then grind off enough to make them weigh the same.

Ohyea. That crank and cam are scrap metal. I kept 4 of the truck rods just in case any of my other thumb rods don't check out at the maching shop, like you said. The block is going to scrap too after looking more closely at that photo.
