Yeah, that's a good point. I took CAD in school but haven't used it in forever. I plan to get a new home computer in the near future and re-teach myself and then I'll get a printer.I didn't buy one for years because I didn't think I needed it. Now that I have one, I use it all the time.
If I have any advice, get one before you need it. My first project took a lot longer because I had to learn CAD first.
I think my first useful prints were some special tools to install the lip seals on my nephew's 4L80 rebuild. They were just big plastic rings printed to thousandths of an inch precision. There were so many special tools required for that job, and we weren't expecting it. Every page in the manual was like, "Oh look, another $1,200 in special tools." Sheesh. Circles were about all I knew how to do, but it was enough.
When your $300 printer saves you $1,200 in special tools, you know it was a wise investment.
