Valvoline racing oil has a **** ton too. I was told by an engine builder that the racing oils are not designed for highway driving and needs changed more regularly then normal oil

Ran Valvoline VR1 forever. Then switched after talking to the Gibbs guys at SEMA a few years ago. I use Driven HR1 10-40 in the 77 with a 406 flat tappet and the 89 V2500 with the stock TBI 350

The 15-50 sounds great, but my concern is with cold weather as I'm seeing temps in the -20's this winter. Thoughts/experiences?

Mine cranks a ton before it fires in cold mornings. By the time it starts it's already primed and running 40 psi

It only gets down to -10° to -15° here, and I haven't had any problems with 15-50.

I use Rotella, and it's pretty cheap at Walmart.

I just spoke with them yesterday about getting another case. They told me some of the formulas have changed so make sure youre still getting what you need. I was running the 7/11 10w30 diesel oil in my car due to it running warmer than I care for but have to re-evaluate now.

So I looked up a few of the brands people have listed and here's a small list of Zinc levels.

Lucas Oil
Break-in oil 30 Wt 3634
16oz Additive bottle 5000 w/4.5 Qts of oil
HotRod Oil 2100

Shaeffer 10w-30 1700-2300

Super Tech 15w-40 1239

Shell Rotella T4 1200

Mobil 1 Racing oil 1825

Pulled this quote. Seems the right balance for street driven flat tappet engines with normal (3000+ mile) oil change intervals is around 1400ppm.
