Guess The Tool

I was thinking something to do with spark plugs, but it seems too small for that, and the drill bit wouldn't be used for spark plugs. I got nothing.

Is it some type of eyelet tool like you use on a sail eyelet where the ring is stitched on or for leather working?

The hole is probably to pull a wire after you drill the hole, but I have no idea what the rest does.

I do think the eye is for pulling something, but it will have to wait until later when I have the necessary pieces to try it.

The tool is about 5-1/2 inches long and the drill is a little bigger than 1/8" if that helps. But it's not a spark plug tool.

That is something I never considered while I was trying to solve the mystery, unfortunately that's not it. But it's a really good guess.

BTW, my calling the front pieces jaws was just what came to mind to describe them. It's not intended to define their purpose, but looking at it I could see how that might be a leading statement.

A soft tubing spreader of sorts, or for spreading a band to install over something. But the drill....that lousy drill...

It's used separately. If you look at the two pics, the first one is assembled and you can see the knurled knob at the top (screwed into the adjusting knob) that is on the end of the drill in the second pic where it is disassembled.

Hmmm,... good question. It's not really intended to enlarge anything, but it may as a result of it's operation.

I had a revelation a couple of days ago about this thing so I thought I'd post it here.

It was kicking around in my father's tool box for decades and I never could figure it out. Then I stumbled across something on the internet and now I finally know what it is.

Anybody else have an idea?:

I've seen a tool very similar but I don't remember a drill bit, the tool was for removing broken taps. The 4 "legs" extended to go in to the grooves of a tap to grab it and turn it out. A machinist friend loaned me one once, worked like a charm.

It does look similar to a tap extractor, but that's not it.

I'm going to leave this up a little longer to see if anybody else wants to take a crack at it. I'll try to post the answer this afternoon.
