That is a pretty fancy or heavy duty pipe cleaner. Most of the pipe tools I've seen look like a swiss army knife run over a couple times. Couple tools fold out and whatnot. Shovel, pick, stem poker, maybe a tamper.
Could probably use it to patch a tire in a pinch.

I don't know if you're going to be interested or disappointed, but keep in mind this thing baffled me for decades, so I was really excited to finally know what it was. Ready?...


It's a pipe reamer.


Despite it's name, it is not a plumbing tool.





It's made to clean the bowl and stem of your smoking pipe.

The hole in the bit is to thread a pipe cleaner through to help clean the pipe-stem.

Last night I went home and dug out my dad's old pipes and tried it out.

Of course, now that I know what it is, there is an abundance of information about them and I discovered that you can still buy them today. The only problem is nobody but greybeards seem to smoke pipes anymore. I don't know if they just fell out of style or too many people were getting hassled by the cops for having drug paraphernalia. But it used to be quite a thing. Too bad.

I guess you could say interested and NOT disappointed! Made me think of my grandpa when I saw what it was actually for who's long been gone and smoked a pipe for a lot of years. Never saw him clean his pipes, but I swear I could smell burning pipe tobacco when I started reading this. I heard his voice in my mind calling out "let's go get 'em Tiger" though for sure. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I remember my granddaddy smoking his pipe too. You're right that tobacco smell actually never bothered me because I liked it. Unlike cigs that do stink. Even after quitting now 1 year ago when I walk by the smokers outside the smell can be enticing but, inside it really starts to stink. 31 years I smoked cigs and it's like 1 **** up and you could start back up. A guy at worked quit for 5 years and started back. Wow that's crazy. I don't think casual smoking is that bad but, I know if I did that I'd start right back up to a pack a day .

I quit back in 2015, and as much as the cravings are still there, I don't give in for this same reason. I do enjoy a wine black & mild from time to time though. Would love to smell some good pipe tobacco again. Nothing like it.

My grandfather was through the korean conflict and smoked for ages... one day at the kitchen table he started coughin up blood. He parked that pack in his left shirt pocket and NEVER smoked again! He died not all that long after due to cancer but DAMN!!! To drop a life long habit just like that... even keeping them in his shirt pocket with himself the whole time. Ive never seen nobody like him.

I've seen a tool very similar but I don't remember a drill bit, the tool was for removing broken taps. The 4 "legs" extended to go in to the grooves of a tap to grab it and turn it out. A machinist friend loaned me one once, worked like a charm.

We have something similar kicking around here. Looks just like an oversized soldering iron. I think that back in the day they used it for soldering sheet metal.
