The pan holding 6 qts and the filter holding 2 qts nets a 8 qt capacity ...

How much oil does a boat engine contain? Wouldn't you match that? Or just match the full mark on the dipstick regardless if it takes 20 gallons of oil?

Not sure ??

I bought the pan off of eBay, didn't get a dipstick with it ..

My concern is to not to over fill, want the oil to be below the crankshaft by a inch or two ...
With where I have the oil level almost touching the GM windage tray is going to be my full mark on the dipstick ..

Hadn't got around to making the stick just yet ..
Going to wait till the motor is in the truck cause I want it close to radiator ..
Be easy to reach without climbing on a fender ..

This one is 32 inches long ..
Can get one longer if I see the need ..

Too much oil above a certain level is not good. I would imagine go with original type dipstick because that would be correct engine level. The extra size oil pan should be designed with that in mind. That's my 2 penny's worth.

That's my thoughts as well. Just higher capacity, not higher level. The stock dipstick would show the correct level regardless of the pan's capacity

Can't use the GM stick ..
They was made with the stick on the side of the pan near the top ..

Mercruiser had there own gig in play with the outlet at the bottom of the pan ..
This design allow for a pump to be attached to the top of the stick to pull the oil out when service denotes ...

With having 6 qts in the slump shouldn't be a need to worry about the motor starving for oil ...

And having the full level about 2 inches below the crankshaft should not cause a problem ...
That 2 inches gives the windage trays room to do their thing ...

I might have overkilled oil control in the lower end, but most likely it's a good place for overkill ?
