Fuel tank selector for 78

Hello,

Looked through the threads but couldn't find any details.
Need to install the fuel tank selector valve in my 78.
PO removed the unit and connected the left tank directly to the lines on the frame rail.

I found this thread which is probably what it looked like:

My tanks were original and the sending units have 3/8 supply, 1/4 return and the 5/16 is a vent. The vent didn't connect to the valve, had a vent cap similar to a differential.

Also, I'm pretty sure the selector switch is original since it's a 5 wire not 6.

What is everyone using in this situation?

My 78 only had 3 ports, one from each tank and one to the pump. No returns. Single wire operation. The switch had 5 wires.

Thanks. Not sure why there is a difference on 78s. Why I have a return and you don't. The wiring is probably the same. I'll have to look.

The reason for the change, is of course, because of the changes in the emission requirements between '78 and '87.

Yes, that's probably it. Looks like 1 wire to it and maybe 1 to the gauge?

your 78 may have had that. is your truck hd chassis, >8600gvw by chance?

It's a k10, but that's probably the one.
2 in for each tank and 2 to the fuel pump.

apparently its not sold anymore, I didnt realize the 3 port 1 wire was easier to find than the 6 port.

If you want to retrofit, there is a kit I just linked from SMP to use the later motorized valve with 6 ports, mounts in place and pipes the same. will last longer but requires more than swap.

Honestly, Im lazy enough to just use two 3 ports... lol. maybe ensure the power supply is better like relayed wi9th good gauge wire so the solenoid engages positvley every time and also if possible a filter in line before the valve for the send pipes would probably increase their life span.

Just an idea
