Edelbrock 1405 carb running rich

I noticed while holding the choke down it was getting moist, gasoline I assume since my hands smell like fuel. I have the box that carb came out of, well a box to a new one, buddy just swapped them out. I can see if it has a choke cable bracket in it? I don’t remember seeing any extra parts. I don’t know if it was flooded or not, I was holding it to the floor when it started cranking slower. The temps aren’t sub zero for say, but it says 34° F on my weather app. Which fkr m location might as well be Antarctica lol. I assume at this point it’s more cold weather and carb than timing, I set the distributor in the engine as if it were a fresh build. And it fires but it won’t stay, so I assume fuel is too cold it’s not atomizing properly, along with dirty plugs, timing is only in the ballpark(I advanced it ever so slightly). I noticed earlier it would occasionally shoot a cloud out of the carb, not fire, but a back ?air? Could that have been an intake valve stuck open during compression stroke? Or am I getting ahead of myself? It was similar to a backfire out of the carb but it wasn’t fire, so it never saw spark. Dad insisted on touching the distributor while I was cranking earlier and it did backfire out of the carb, had to put out a fire, whether he had it advanced or retarded the world may never know since he doesn’t really know which way he’s turning it.

o I couldn’t see to verify but pumping the gas you could hear a squeaking(accelerator pump?) so I could hear something doing something, and it would fire for longer if you pumped it first before cranking, so some fuel was coming through. Whether or not I leaned it too much or if it’s just too cold I don’t know yet

it should still run if its lean or rich ,it sound as if u have your timing pretty close. now we have to work on the carb. get u a light and shine down in the carb and see if u r getting 2 good solid squirts of fuel make sure dont guess

Heres just some pics of mine. The distributor is now pointing More towards that breather cap on the valve cover, just slightly. Im showing mine because I dont have a "timed" example because I just havent got that far yet, but my truck starts amazing all things considered.

A little less than the cap is in this photo. Say looking at the distributor straight on the coil being - it’s slightly rotated counter clockwise. I mean slightly. I figure 8° by guessing but not sure. I can check to see if fuel is squirting tomorrow and take a pic of the distributor

So that looks WAY off compared to mine then, because The tail of the cap with the connector is biased t oward the carb vs yours woulkd either be perpendicular or facing away yet. Hmmm

To my knowledge yours is retarded, but like @Bextreme04 mentioned, you may have spark plug wires rotated once counter clockwise, I wanted #1 at the front right of cap, he said his preference was the spot beside the plug on the cap. Hell if I know, it’s all confusing, I try to understand how it works but one second I’ll think I know what I’m doing then one thing might be 1% wrong and I gotta question everything I’ve done so far.

And yes, mine is very retarded. Thats me advancing it a lot over what my gpa had. Lol

I’m sure I missed it,but is this HEI distributor used,new,been gone through?

If not new,or gone through,your truck could possibly not run no matter where you turn the distributor.

Ignition modules go out.12 volts is required for HEI to work properly.The 2 part video I turned you on to,covers all of the last few pages of these comments.I know you done have a timing mark,but you can get it ballpark.Remember,you don’t wanna be exactly at zero,but roughly 10 * BTDC at start up.

Also,don’t mess with any other components or settings,IE the carb,unless you have made sure the initial component is addressed.unless it obvious,of course.

It’s like being lost.Don’t leave the car unless you know for sure.Lots of bears and other creatures lurking.And don’t get more lost.

Lastly,I believe you can do this.But if not,take it to an expert.

based on the fact he did have it running for 15 seconds I think thats solid advice if tomorrow with a fresh battery charge and opportunity for things to be "at rest" Then things dont work.

@Curt its the same distributor that came in the truck, I haven’t got to set the timing because I can’t keep it running long enough, I’m just hoping it’s too cold currently, but there’s no telling. The truck would run, I couldn’t keep it running for long, but it ran.

the hei dist needs a solid 12 volts , i believe it will run now with a good batt charge

It should be getting power, there’s a wire going on the outside of the cap by the “tach” plug, and a three wire plug that goes closer in on the cap that comes from inside the distributor. Is there anything I can do to help it out in the cold weather? The choke is ziptied shut, I’m going to see if that bracket came in the box and if so I’ll install it and a choke cable, should I pour a little fuel in as a boost? Like @Bextreme04 said, turn up the idle screw?
