It should be getting power, there’s a wire going on the outside of the cap by the “tach” plug, and a three wire plug that goes closer in on the cap that comes from inside the distributor. Is there anything I can do to help it out in the cold weather? The choke is ziptied shut, I’m going to see if that bracket came in the box and if so I’ll install it and a choke cable, should I pour a little fuel in as a boost? Like @Bextreme04 said, turn up the idle screw?
I've got an old 1405 that came on an old motor I bought a while back. It has the bracket on it, so if you need one I can mail it to you.

I would bet at this point you are just one little thing away from getting it going. When you say it fires and then dies when you let of the starter, that tells me that you need to give it a little bit more throttle. Just enough to keep it running. Once it is running long enough to warm up, you will need to get it fully warm and then set the timing. Then set the warm idle rpm. Then adjust the idle mixture screws to lean of peak. Then you should be golden. Once you have all of that dialed in, it should fire up fine on the choke the next day for you to set the cold high idle RPM(which should start off at around 900RPM cold and then rise to about 1200-1300RPM as it warms).

Also, I would suggest you give it about 2 full turns on the high idle screw before you try to start it. If it fires and still tries to die, give it another turn.

@Bextreme04 ill get some more fresh fuel later and a new inline filter, just as precaution. And I’ll have to look into dialing the choke idle screw and regular idle screw, my tachometer was freaking out the other day from all the cranking… it’s not a high end tach but there’s something wrong with it or the truck, it was sitting there rapidly bouncing from 0-500 rpm after I stopped cranking, I don’t know if that’s important but I completely forgot about it until now. At one point it showed like 800 rpm and I wasn’t cranking, just ignition on. I’ll go check the box for that bracket and try and get an actual choke cable on it instead of having it ziptied to the fuel inlet. It’s around 30° today, I’ll check to see if fuel squirts with throttle, if not then what? Or should I check before asking? It’s cold I don’t want to be out there unless I’m making progress at this point lol. Also since the tach was freaking out could that be a wiring issue on my end? Distributor junk? Or junk tach? It was just a like $20 one off the interwebs.

Also is there anyway of replacing the plug for the coolant sensor on the drivers side head? I noticed after taking the spark plugs out I kept knocking it off and the plastic is cracked on one side so it kinda falls off easily, I assume it’s not getting a great connection so if it’s easily replaceable I’ll look into getting it fixed.
Edit: also when I took the carb off no fuel came back out of the line, why is the fuel returning back down? It’s a new fuel pump(installed before I got the truck) but either way I don’t see why it would drain back that much that quickly so the lines were dry

do you have a blue spade crimp connector? the one that takes the spade that is, the female end? If so, You can crimp that on to the wire, then slide that over the button and put a tiny squeeze with a needle nose on the edge to "lock" it on the thing.

can you send a picture of your engine, encompassing everything like your carb, lines, plug wires etc etc.

also, is your spark plug wires on the right order? Ive been there before.

Yes the plug wires are all in the right spot just like as labeled on that cap. I’ll go take pictures.

Here’s everything I think I should show. I tried to include everything. I also noticed fuel leaking around the throttle linkage. Or around there not sure exactly where, but it was moist and dripping off bottom of throttle linkage, so this carb might be at this point a lost cause.

Also after adding fuel directly it stopped firing so I held pedal to floor and still nothing. So is this sounding more like a flooded/ and or/ carb issue at this point instead of timing?

Maybe... but I'd check a few things first. Pull the fuel line to the carb and stick it into a clear bottle. Give it a few cranks and make sure you are getting good fuel flow into the carb. Then pull one of the plugs and see if it is firing. I have a plug tester where I can just hook the wire to it and ground the other end and see how it sparks. you can do the same thing with an actual plug and the threaded plug body grounded to something.

I can try that tomorrow, it’s almost dark now and it’s 30°, I got off to today on a late start. Also could not find that choke cable bracket, nothing in box nothing on the carb, I’ll ask him and see if he’s got one and if he doesn’t I may need to purchase one

Here’s what the bracket looks like on the junk 1405 I have. I can probably just drop it in a First class USPS envelope to you for a few bucks.
