Cleaning undercarriage

Hey everyone,
With all this time on my hands I’m wondering if anyone has some tips on the best way to clean up/remove surface rust and eventually undercoat my truck. Is it going to be necessary to tear it apart?

An angle grinder with wire brush attachments, wire cup, wire wheel.
3M has some professional grade undercoatings in spray cans.

thanks guys just got it up and running as my daily, still chasing that oil leak but it’s not horrible.

Yes just a one man operation here for now and I don’t have a hoist or anything.

shouldnt be too hard ot pull bed... that way you can get the top of frame. helps keep bed from rotting, whic hyou can hit it while its off the frame way easier. but cab is a different story.

I use a needle scaler and it works great.

Plenty of videos on You Tube on this. Heat gun, cup style wire brush on drill, then goo gone spray gel, wipes old undercoating right off. At least that's what I've seen. Rust needs wire brush, drill to remove. Heavy rust...needle scaler.

I think it's mostly used in the Marine industry? But heck I don't know.

Yeah a needle gun would do the trick. Been using one pretty much non stop for 2 weeks now. We started with 3 brand new units and killed one so far. Followed by some Carboline Rustbond after it was down to bare metal. I have to say if you want your frame to stand the test of time. Descale it down all the way to the balls and then coat it with Rustbond. You could then do undercoating on that and you will NOT be disappointed. Just how we do things on the vessel and if done right it works great in salt water conditions so what ever you got on land would be a walk in the park.
