I've been chasing an exhaust rattle, and I think I finally nailed it. My muffler was thumping so I put a new one on. I had a shop weld in a new section of pipe to replace the half-rotten factory pipe between the Y pipe and the muffler, which also deleted what was left of my catalytic converter. I also replaced a leaky exhaust manifold gasket on one side. All this managed to get rid of an underhood tick and a great deal of rattling, but there's still a tiny one left, and it just now dawned on me that it's probably that stupid EFE valve, and maybe the spring in it broke or something. I noticed for a long time that I could hear the EFE valve close the flapper whenever I shut the key off and it lost vacuum, but it doesn't do it anymore. It was a very audible grinding squeak. The little arm on it still moves back and forth good, but I don't think it's holding vacuum because I know it's not operating correctly. I know I could tie the valve open, but I'm not sure if this'll fix my rattle. If it will cure the noise, I'll just wire it open, disconnect the vacuum, and call it a day, but if not, what does removing it entail?

It's the heat riser between the manifold and head pipe.

Ahhh OK, now I know exactly what he's talking about. I've just used different terminology.

I just don't see how it's a Fuel Evap Valve. I'm thinking Canister Purge ******** when I hear Evap. In Cali we usually called it the Heat Riser Restrictor Valve cuz that's what it does. It restricts the exhaust so the heat will stay in the manifold so the heat riser has hot air to feed the thermostatic air cleaner. Learn something new everyday.

I took the flap out of one and welded up the holes and put it back since the p.o. had a new exhaust system ran and I didn't want to pay to fill the void.
I know its cast but it took the weld and has held up for two years now.
