Hi all. Have an ignition problem I don't know how to solve on my 77 C10 with tilt steering. I replaced the ignition switch a few months ago. The other day at a store, I got in to go home and the key turned all the way, no ignition. So I had to unmount the switch and manually operate it. Got home, then hopped on my bike to run to pick up a new lock cylinder. Put that in, but it does not move the rod that is supposed to operate the ignition switch. Any idea how to dig into that to see what broke and if there's a part to replace it with? Thanks

Most likely the ignition rack.

Thanks. Does anyone have a good youtube tutorial for this? I looked but could only find a video for a later model. I searched some threads here for ignition rack, it seems like people are describing taking more apart than the guy did in the video I found. Though I couldn't really tell because he jumped around a bit. The ignition rack was not his main repair.
Any other parts I should get to while I'm there? I've got the turn signal (for the 3rd time. Standard brand turn signals suck), and I already swapped the ignition switch. I have a new lock cylinder, though that does not appear to be the problem. What else? Also, anyone know where to get a replacement rack? I didn't see it on Rockauto or Oreilly. Thanks

If tilt assembly is loose at all now is a good time to tighten the lower bolts.

So I have been using this video to get an idea of what I have to take apart
xc_hide_links_from_guests_guests_error_hide_media

It's a later model than my '77 but I don't know what year. He's got his wipers and dimmer switch on the column which I don't have. I got as far as 5:30. Took out the tilt spring. I cannot seem to get the collar that has the bearings in it to come off. It seems to be held in at the top but I can't figure out what is holding it. That looks like the last thing to remove before I can get the new rack on (old one was in fact snapped). His video skips the collar actually coming off.

Any idea what holds that collar on?

At 6:43 red greased area on top may be holding it. Part of tilt assembly. Should be able to release with the tilt lever.

Have the tilt pins on the side removed? Lock and key should be out to release and allow gear for the rack to turn.

There are differences between the early and later columns. Try to find a video showing style your working on.

Thanks. Tilt pins are out (assuming these are the pressed in ones. I made a makeshift puller with an 8-32 bolt, wingnut and a 13mm socket), lock cylinder is out, sector gear is out. I even got the broken rack out. I unscrewed the tilt lever when he did, prior to removing the sector gear and the pin that goes through it. Do I need to put it back in, and if so, the pins and the spring as well?

I tried to find a video of my year but no luck.

This might help- It goes into detail how to put the column back together.
You are probably around page 28. I would read a little before that page and through the next few to get an idea of how it goes back together.
