1 how do you remove the flame arrestor in the air intake?
2 does the smog pump have its own separate belt?

1. just pry/cut it out

2. If it's a small block without a serpentine belt, then yes it has a separate belt.

Your 1/2 ton has a flame arrestor?

Mine did. I think its epoxied in, heat up the area underneath it, and pop it with a hammer.

My half tons that came with stock air cleaners didn't have one. '79 250, '84 305, and '88 350. I wonder what determined if it got one?

hmm interesting, well my flame arrestor and catalytic converter are off and the smog pump is disconnected. i have noticed that it runs better and has a bit more power. also the exhaust has a raspier tone to it. i like it. but i checked my timing today and it is at 6 degrees instead of 4. how bad is that?

That's not bad. The higher you go you gain more performance until you hit spark knock, but lose fuel economy.

i run my sb350 @ 10 degrees runs great

Mine are all happy at 8-12* advanced. That's where the most power and mileage is, but without spark knock. Emissions is likely higher (why else would the factory retard the timing?), but emissions is not my goal.

just do it 2 degrees at a time, and then back it off when you hear pinging. is your carb and distributor computer controlled?

im almost positive the carb is but no idea on the distributor
