This **** is very confusing to me. I was able to do the "paper clip" systems that you could diagnose yourself, but the newer systems after that seem complicated.

Try owning a 1994-95 GM with the hybrid OBD1 with OBD2 protocols...Only a Tech1 with the update, a Tech2, 1 or 2 code readers or a laptop with Tunerpro or EFILive will read it. :shitsweak:

The OBDll systems are much simpler to me, but they are a bit more complicated but when a computer can tell you where to start, then diagnosis starts from there and it becomes easy. Many people THINK it easy and no diagnostics are needed. BS. Just like the a common EVAP code. Everyone will sell you a gas cap. Chances are its NOT the gas cap.

So as far as this particular vehicle is concerned, it is going to be around for a while. Is there anything affordable I can buy that will help me diagnose it myself or just f-it and run it to AZ to be scanned?

A code reader, auto ranging multimeter, a set of feeler gauges and the internet is about all you need to diagnose and track down what's wrong. Usually you can find a list of things that could be wrong in order you should check them and it really makes it so much easier than OBDI.

You need a scantool to bleed brakes on some OBDII systems. You wont know it til you go to bleed the brakes unless it says it in the owners manual.

WHOA WHOA WHOA NELLY !!! We've already cleaned up this thread once having Scanner discussion. Take it to the new thread made for this purpose. We're not talking about bleeding brakes, and we're not talking about Scanners. We discussing an O4 CAvi and a Code Reader to diagnose it. :grd:

Nobody said **** about brakes Dave I'm talking about the problem John is having with his mom's car. He should be able to diagnose any engine problem with the things I mentioned.

Scanners and code readers both fall under diagnostics tools. So whats the issue?

A rectal thermometer is a diagnostic tool too, but its off-topic is it not??? That's the ISSUE.

He's not looking to open up a shop, he wants to read a code and erase it. If it does that, then it does what he needs for the least expense. And in 3 years or so if he needs it again, he's got it. I've got a $200 Actron Code Reader that I've used 20 times and never on my own vehilces. Lucky for me I got it on sale 50% off brand new at Pep Boys on a Memorial Day blowout sale or some **** like that.

I understand what your saying but if he buys uses it once while still under warranty. Then 2 years later get it out and it wont work and no longer under warranty.
