    Catalytic Converter Question

The air injection tube is for three way catalyst, which I don't believe any 49 state squarebodies used (can't say for sure for Cali). The rear bed of 3 way catalyst uses platinum, palladium, and rhodium to break down NOx emissions (besides CO & HC), some applications required more oxygen for the...

no off position on fan control?

This sounds like a non-A/C truck to have floor vents. The A/C and non-A/C trucks of the era run the fan all the time, even in the off position. Lessens the chance of CO poisoning and is a hold over from the 'Astro Ventilation' era, IMHO.

    TH400 bangs into gear

Turbo 400s are known for intermittent excessively harsh engagement into reverse. A Transgo kit lists it as one of the things it fixes. Mine is actually so far on the gentle side the truck has to roll briefly at times (only a couple feet) to 'feel' fully engaged. Prior to the kit, it would...

Default Any inline6 250 experts need some advice

Positively not an integral in the picture, they look so different. The Op's looks just like my '78 292. I would love to change my intake to I could put a TBI system on it. I've been looking at building a programming one, but I have to change the intake. Don't want to go with a Clifford because...

    250ci 6 Cylinder Emissions Questions.

It is a deceleration valve, I assume you have a manual transmission. The differential pressure between ported and non ported vacuum causes it to open upon deceleration, which helps prevent fuel from being pulled from the carburetor causing higher HC & CO emissions. The rest of it (in the valve...

    Identify this decal

Definitely aftermarket, but I've never seen it before either. The 4x4 and stripes may be unrelated as well, but someone liked the combination and put them together.

Cruise control arm but no wiper controls

My '81 tilt column had cruise and no wiper control. I believe the wiper control appears around '84, just like the B-body cars. Keep in mind the coupling at the column to the intermediate shaft changes around 80-81 so I had to use the shaft from the '81. Coupled perfectly at the rag joint when...

    Heater core

Most anything newer makes a squarebody heater core (w or wo/AC) seem easy. Fixing all the other little problems with the air box (w/AC) i.e. seals, actuators, vacuum lines, is a bigger job.

    Help ID this switch

Move to the left for a 'mist' position. It will wipe as long as you hold it to the left. One click to the right is intermittent. Rotate the know clockwise to decrease the timed interval, i.e. make the wipers run more. It may not run at all if fully counter-clockwise, and may run all the...

    Help! What is this???

You might want to preemptively grease and replace the center plastic latch/tab. It may already be broken on one side now. It comes completely apart when both tabs break off. They get so brittle with age. http://www.gmsquarebody.com/forum/showthread.php?p=236797#post236797

    1.4v at electric choke?

It is supposed to come on with the key on, engine off (everything intact). If the choke heater fails or is unhooked, it should be on when the engine is running (assuming there is oil pressure). If it is failed/unhooked when the key is on, engine off, I believe the light will be off (failing...

    1.4v at electric choke?

"if i unplug the wire from the choke i get 12.7 volts when the key is ON/Engine off, is it supposed to work like that too"? "I still don't understand why I have 12v with the wire unhooked and very little voltage with it hooked up and engine off for both" If I'm understanding this correctly...

    1.4v at electric choke?

The engine has to be running to close the oil pressure switch to deliver the source voltage (+12v) to the choke heater.

    Is this piece important?

I'll start by saying I've never purchased any of the control head parts, just taken them apart and fixed them. With that said, the broken clip in your original picture would come with new parts, as they are assembled and not meant to be serviced. If we are talking the little metal clips that...

    Is this piece important?

I showed the wrong part earlier, that was the electrical part of the control head. Here is the vacuum part. Same little fastener on both that can break. Sorry for the confusion. It's terrible getting old...

    Is this piece important?

The functional part of the control head is a very common item and may be available locally too. The vacuum ports are on the opposite side of the picture and I circled the cavity where the ends of the clip are that are prone to breaking (as yours did).

    Is this piece important?

I think it is actually the little tab that holds the HVAC control head together (w A/C only). You can take a comparable diameter push type door panel fastener to hold it together. It's a good time to add a little grease (vacuum or dielectric) to the control head to keep it from leaking and...

    Manual Torque Convertor Lock-up 700r4

A full manual mode scares me. If you forget or someone else drives the vehicle, the possiblity is there to overheat the torque converter/entire transmission when running for long periods of time in over drive with the converter unlocked.

Consumer Awareness when buying parts !!!

I encountered the same thing with a '96 Chevy 3.1 recently. I was so shocked by the seal price that I checked the timing cover gasket set price. Just kept the extra gaskets. It's more common than I realized.
