What's up guys?
I have a 18 -year-old 1406 Edelbrock carburetor that's been rebuilt twice. Ot stars right up in the morning, no problem......but, I've been having issues with it not cranking right up after I've driven it for 30 minutes, let it sit for while, then try to start it up again... and after that, if I turn it off and start it up again it cranks right up .Do you recommend me buying a new one or rebuilding it again? And if I buy a new one, what carburetor do you recommend? I have a 350 small block in a '84 Chevy C10

Replace it with a Q-Jet or rebuild it while making certain your rebuild kit can handle ethanol fuel.

Sounds like it needs a minor adjustment, not a full rebuild. With a warm engine you can easily get too much fuel for a reliable hot start. Try just leaving your foot off the pedal and cranking it if the engine is warm/hot.

The newer Edelbrock AVS 2 gets a lot of high marks for simple driveability, and it’s supposed to be a lot snappier off the line than the 1406. Quadrajets are good (I am running one), but it’s harder to find a good core and a good rebuilder, and it’s usually not cheap if it’s a quality shop.

I run a 500cfm AVS2 with electric choke in my K5 with a 350. Throttle response is great. Add a tune up kit if you buy one. It's on it till I get to rebuild one of my shelved Quadrajets. Which could be probably far in the future.

Really sounds like a hot soak problem. Check fuel pressure and float setting. If that's ok try non-ethanol fuel. I have the same issue with a q-jet on hot days and tried AV gas as a test. That fixed it but at $7 a gallon not an option. Actually, back in the day some new vehicles had hot soak hard starts. A phenolic spacer might help. Remember today's fuel is not designed for carbs.

I was having this same issue over the HOT summer, initially thought it was because I swapped in a metal cased Wix fuel filter.

Ended up being the ignition module crapping out a few times before finally failing for good.

Next time the issue is happening, check to see if you have spark from the plugs, if not, swap your ignition module

Wait a minute, Quadrajunks are spread bores, Them 1400 Eldies be square bores :-O

He gonna need a AFB, or a Holley.

I have a bucket of Holley 4250s, but I'd suggest an AFB Carter 4000 series.

Yes but the Edelbrock fits on the gm square bore manifold. The AVS2 is spread bore. Adapters are available too. An insulator spacer could help with heat soak problems which is caused by modern crappy fuel.

I had no problems with starting the engine when warm 10 years ago, now on warm days all our carburated cars are hard to start, no matter which carb (Rochester, Edelbrock, Autolite)
The fuel in the bowl is gone in 15 minutes.

Can you take a picture of the carburetor without the air filter on right before you crank it up? Then set the filter on, then attempt to start how you have been normally trying to, and report results

Can op show us your setup? a stock iron manifold for a qjet with an adapter with the 1406, it would be easy to put a ASV2 on since it will still be a spreadbore intake. But if its a square bore intake, keeping your 1406 is easier because its easy to rebuild/tune and you already have it. What kind of climate you live in, and what kind of use you use your truck for?

Some of the basic Edelbrock intakes, like the Performer, are drilled for both spreadbore and squarebore patterns, so you can swap without using any adapter.

GM also recommends always using an insulating spacer (although the stock Quadrajet spacer is only about 3/8” thick). Using a fuel pump and sending units with a return line can also help with hard starting, since it returns hot fuel to the tank and pulls fresh, cooler fuel up to the carburetor.

I forgot which Intake I have but it was only square bore im pretty sure,

To aid the heat thing, you can get a heat shield for radiant heat, use it with a phenolic spacer, and insulate the fuel line where its hot, and like you said a return line all help. A small pusher pump to keep the fuel line before fuel pump on engine from being under all that vacuum, so its not so prone to vaporize as well
