What's the best gen 454 block to build?

If oil leaks and cam lobes are a concern, go with a gen VI. The stock heads are supposed to be decent too.

A gen V is only good for two things. A near stock build or an all-out build. There's really no middle ground because of parts compatibility with other years and the heads kinda suck.

A mark IV is tried and true.

What, don't think it can be done in the $4k range? I'm talking parts, not machine work. Only machine work I can't do myself is line bore right now.

For factory block, earlier the better they're thicker, for 496+ early tall deck 427 truck block..

Trying to keep initial cost low, don't plan on paying more than $200 for a good short block, just not sure what the good/bad are between the mark 4, gen 5 and gen 6.

Gen VI is the predecessor to Mark IV, majority of the parts swap without special gaskets, has factory roller cam does not have fuel pump mount from what I have read. Gen V is the mercursier co-op with GM and it can be built like the others but if you are looking for a block to start with find a IV or VI and not have to mess with gen V related swap parts.

Interesting, I know where I can get one of those, complete running 5 yard dump truck for $1k. Never really thought about a tall deck since it's rare you see them around here.


IMO you should have bought that already and we should be here looking at the pics.

Rusty Nail, guess I have a really bad memory...what about a 262 crank? I have 350's and 305 in my monza's, don't have a 262 laying around. Last I looked, a few people on the H-body forum had a 262 up for grabs. There was a guy on spokane craigslist that had one up for about a year before it disappeared last month, nothing since.

If you had a 262 crank, I'd ask you to put a price on it because I sure would like to buy one and I know that some Monzas had them. I only assume you like Monzas - maybe you know somebody....Worth a shot!

All depends on what you wanna do with it. A 2 bolt block can be splayed, where as a 4 bolt limits you and would leave a stress point in the open hole. Unless you fill that hole with a below surface stud with loctite and a ball bearing to put load pressure on the threads.
