No change on the tranny leak, though- Goldie still marks the spots she has been in...

:D

I find it odd that when I drive mine daily it doesn't leak tranny fluid, but let it sit and it leaves a puddle.

Maybe driving it gets the seals more limber, and then when it sits, it hardens up again?

If this engine oil leak continues to be lessened as it is now, I might risk some semi syn next oil change.

Hit the pull a part, needed a better license plate holder for the CUCV, and doubt I will ever need the pintle hitch. Also got a pair of cab steps, a rally wheel, and a couple of Heel steering shafts.

Found a good trim piece that goes between the rear bumper and body of the K5, but couldn't get it off without pulling the bumper and I didn't bring my 1/2" socket set. Will have to get it next time.

Found a pickup that has a pair of cab corner speaker mounts, and a couple of other goodies but I was freezing my was off by then so they will have to wait for another day too.

Decided to change plugs. Vato Zone did not have the plain Jane AC Delco R45TS ( I think that's the P/N ) but did have platinum- only 8. Cool.

Like $1.99 each - sure, why not.

Got home, did my thing, go to pull the #6 replacement out, and there is a chunk out of the porcelain out of the box.

So, # 2 is still on an old plug ...

Easiest one to change.

Also bought a wobbly spark plug socket cuz I wasn't sure if there was a plug socket in my Dad's set.

There was - 3 wobblers.

SOB - to top it off, the wobbler IMHO makes it harder ...

Hah hah - still has a bit of that idle with the ac off, too.

So does the Camaro, but that is the way it is supposed to be on a LS1.

Maybe I should have spent my time checking vacuum hose routing.

Decided to pull # 4 to see how it looked after 40 miles. All good.

Go to put it back in - won't start !

WTF!

Try with the old plug - nope. Pull # 2, try it in 4 - nope.

Put back in # 2 - no problem.

Try 4 again - won't start.

Goddamit - I gotta be somewhere! :flame:


Clean any crud out of the hole with my finger. Eyeball the plug threads, but nothing obvious.


Decide to try to find my Dad's tap and die set - no clue where its at. Craftsman 30 or so year old set - good chit.

Can't spend too long looking, so tell the plug you gotta go in.

One last wipe of the hole with my finger, and try again - finally.

Damn truck trying to show me who's boss.

What the hell ? I am trying to help you here.

Simplest things sometimes ...

Spark plug appears to be 20 threads per inch, but must be larger than 1/2 inch.

So, now I am curious - what is the thread size for a GM plug?

Its metric, M14x1.25
Also you need a spark plug tap, a regular M14x1.25 tap will not be the right tolerance for a spark plug

Again with crazy knowledge. How do you know this?!
I had read once they were metric, as Albert Champion (founder of Champion) was a bike racer and ended up making and selling plugs on the side as a source of income, being french I guess thats why they used metric.

Although before the 40's a lot of american built vehicles used tapered pipe threads on the spark plugs

Have to get one for next time I eyeball the plugs, although usually 8 was the one I checked being close to the EGR.

And, the EFE.

Goldie takes longer to warm up now, so I guess that thing helped, but no bueno for **** when the engine is fully warmed up and it is still dumping exhaust thru the intake.

Either a bad thermal vacuum switch or misrouted vacuum lines - the lines are the next lookie loo task.

Don't take this the wrong way because I enjoyed the journey thus far. I'm just confused as to why we needed a tap for a spark plug hole?

The thought was to clean the threads since it just didn't want to start in the hole.

I thread them in by hand, so the odds of it being cross threaded are like none, and it is not like I aped em down, so I doubt it is stripped.

Just typical quick and simple project gets a bit more complex.

I mean come on - you can see the holes for 2 & 4 without trying.

Anyway, make sense ?
