Nowhere is entirely safe, though I've lucked out most of the time, and only had to fix rockers and cab corner damage. '70s trucks seem to disentagrate in my area, and they don't even salt the roads here. The '80s trucks seem to hold up fine for the most part. Perhaps GM changed their metal surface treatment at some point.

I drove Squarebodies that were 5-7 years old at the time and didn't have enough metal to hold the wheel well trim and had holes in the floorboards, lol. Both 70s and 80s models that were quickly on their way to becoming a powdery pillar of rust with a tire at each corner. Poor water drainage and build designs around battery boxes and cabs with little weatherproofing/rust preventatives. But then again, folks traded every 2 years.
I cannot imagine buying an ie 2018 Silverado today for 50K and having to spend a weekend every few months tacking bondo and spreading a rattle can of primer around my fixes.

Had been seeing this truck sitting in a field near Mannford Ok. Went to inquire, but turned around at "Do Not Enter" sign.
Next trip to Okla, went past signs and knocked on door, no answer. Left a note on the windshield. Guy called me back. Bad flywheel but we push started truck, paid him 2800 and parked it in Sapulpa till the next trip.
Hauled it home to S. Louisiana, 6500# across the scales, on a 7K rated trailer.
Wyoming truck, hole in floorboards big enough for my dog to fall thru, frame sitting on springs cause bushings gone, etc, etc. Got good bones though

I got my 73 in 2019 and paid $5000 for it. Sold it in 2022 for $24000. I bought the yellow 79 for $2900 this spring. Yes that is a Catfish on the door and says public works. It had belonged to a small town on the Snake River..Lots of work ahead for me on this one.

I paid $6300 for my 84 in 2019. Chased this truck for a while. It seems that every time I was supposed to go look at it we had to evacuate for a hurricane. I had the front end rebuilt, new TH350, dash pad and stereo. Also added a tilt column and aftermarket steering wheel.

I've been incredibly lucky with the squares I've had. First one was a 78 Blazer I got in trade for some work on a 50 Plymouth, 4 speed truck but a basket case.
Second one was an 84 Suburban Silverado, red with a silver stripe, not a speck of rust on it. Needed a driver's window and brakes when I got it in '08, along with small stuff, had an Edelbrock 1406 and some other upgrades. Paid $500. Miss that truck.

Number three was Frankentruck (second pic), bought from a neighbor for $1000. I think it started as a 76, 1 ton long bed crew cab, telescopic back bumper with souped up big block, AWD, diffs were permanently locked and the axle ratio gave it a top speed of 60. Didn't keep it long but managed to embarass some folks at traffic lights.

Number four was a basketcase municipal fleet 83 custom deluxe reg cab that I got for $600 and sold with no improvement due to life changes, which brings us to number 5.

Current square is a 90 Suburban SLE (sig pic) that I picked up in Montana for $1350 last year. Has holes in rear rockers and some paint issues, but runs and drives well enough, came with most of the options. We drove it from far north Montana back to Coeur d'Alene with zero issues after it sat for at least 6 years. Literally a battery and gas.

Seeing what people are/have paid I'm beginning to think I'm more than blessed!

The '79 Chevy Silverado C10 Burb we bought in '89, paid $1500. A little used car lots on North Durham,
in the Heights in Houston. Drove that Burb all over the state, it would go when the '84 Silverado Burb wouldn't. It was a "work truck special" that's why we got it that cheap. No AC, the compressor was gone! Two tone metallic brown and cream, 350.
The '84 we bought at a lot in Stafford, Texas, after looking at every freakin Suburban in greater Houston area. I found it in a "cars for sale" newspaper on my lunch break at work! This one was plusher than the '79, with velour upholstery, power windows and locks, and working AC! Two tone dark blue and silver, like the one on the '86 brochure. I had a love/hate relationship with this one, because when you counted on being able to go somewhere in it(because AC) it didn't always want to. This one we paid $4000 for in 1992. It got stolen in 2005 over Labor Day weekend; ironically Dad and I had done a lot of work on it all that weekend.
The '90 GMC R2500 Burb was bought from a guy in SW Houston that had bought it for his wife to use for taking people around in her real estate job. It was a little rough around the edges, and being a 3/4 ton, 8600# gvwr truck,a bit much for some folks to get in and out of. Also by 2002, considered too old.... IIRC we paid $2200 for it. Might've got them down to $2000, I don't remember. Mom and I were on the way to work when we saw it going down the 610 service road, chased it till I could write the number down off the big side glass. This one also had the blue velour upholstery, with buckets and console, PW/PL, and the factory super dark tinted windows. White with light metallic blue on the sides. Good ol truck, just runs out of mojo on the road above 60, with the TBI 350, TH400 and 4.10s in the 14 bolt semi floating axle. '90 was the last year before the truck overdrive automatics....
We seriously looked at putting a Gear Vendors OD unit in it, but they were more bucks than we paid for the truck.... So we just dealt with it.
The pickups were bought new; the '75 came from Lester Goodson Pontiac GMC in north Houston, the '78 came from GMC Truck Center in Houston, which sold a lot of fleet trucks and medium duty and heavy duty trucks. I don't think they're still around....The '81 came from Frank Gillman Pontiac GMC in SW Houston, they are long gone. That dealership had a bad reputation in Houston area.... I think that truck was around $9000. The '75 Sierra Classic was around $5400-5500 IIRC, and the '78 Sierra was about the same price 3 years later. '75 didn't have power windows and locks, but had about everything else you could get. Even the super rare GMC wire wheel covers..... I think Dad sold those many years ago, but they may have been stolen. We had a couple of break ins at the shop building....

Paid 10k in Aug '22. 94k original. New: tires, ball joints, sway bar bushings, shocks, starter, alt, radiator, batt, nv4500 (7k receipt just for that), hidden fifth wheel, belts, hoses, maybe some other small things I forgot. Have no fear, of hooking my car trailer to her, loading it down to capacity, and crossing this continent we live on lol.

Jimmy, what's that emblem I see on your front quarter panels? My dually only had 2 mounting holes on each panel, right where those emblems are on your truck. Can you post a close-up here?

It is a Harley 100 anniversary emblem, a po installed in its past. Wish it were an Indian, or triumph though. It does look better than the stock emblems, I think.
