What are 40” Ground Hawgs Worth?

Found a set for sale in my area, they’re 40x17x15 with 90% tread on them and no cracking.

He is willing to do $1200 for the set. I’m not sure if that is a reasonable price or not. I have one friend who said to buy them and another who said it was too much. Would like your opinions.

This is a touchy subject. Many people will say those tires are old, rotten, worthless and a safety hazard on a public roadway. But they are a really good find to people that want a period correct look and realize that some old tires are well built and very strong.

I can't say on value, just that I would want them too, lol.

Interco is producing the 15/38R15 (yes, radials!) again and they say they will be making 17/40’s in the next year or so.

I had a set of 17/40 16.5's on my IHC & it was a beast. I loved the way those tires bit & wheeled. This was before the TSL Bogger was invented.
The set you're looking at are probably 30 years old or older. But, they'll look SO MUCH better than Nitto's & big hoops.

I bought them. I’m actually running a set of 38” hawgs currently, and I like the tire a lot. It’s no bogger but it’s definitely a capable tire imo. I’m glad interco is bringing them back. Wonder if gumbo mudders will ever make a return lol.

I've had several sets of TSL's Hawg's and also had some Gumbo's. The Gumbo and Hawg tires were used in NC for competition mud pit racing. Toward the close of last century (and millennium) the TSL started to take over. In the early 00's the Bogger came on the scene and changed things totally. I loved the Hawgs on my IHC, but when they bit you could really tell it on the engine output. It would bog down quickly and I'd have to find 1st gear on the ole Torqueflite trans. They worked for what they were intended as well as the Gumbo. Good luck with your purchase and show us some pics.
