Waxing

What products do you use to wax the original paint, specifically on an 84?
The truck as seen better days and it's time to buff it.

My 84 has the same problem...clear coat is a disaster.

Last Friday I used Mothers California Gold Carnuba Cleaner Wax and got really good results. Mine doesn't have clear coat, though.

Maybe try a polish first, then go to a wax.

I wondered if that would be the steps.

I know on newer clear coats, I would do scratch remover, polish, and carnuba.

But wasn't sure if it was the same steps on older vehicles.

If it's single stage paint, I use DuPont #7 rubbing compound, followed by a good wax.

Make sure you buy good quality rubbing compound, and start out gently.

I used Turtle Wax compound from the local parts place and it was like using light sandpaper on my black Mustang. It took several applications of better products (IIRC they were from Meguiars) to get rid of the swirls.

I haven't seen it in a while but I had great results with Blue Coral. It took 2 days by hand (about 12 hours) and a lot of elbow grease and cotton rags but the final result was excellent/awesome/rad; etc.

It was a 2 part deal. A cleaner/polish then a wax.

I agree. Clear coat is worthless.

And, corn starch will get rid of swirls better than anything you get from the auto parts stores.

I've never used clay but have seen some great results on other paint jobs with it.

If using just wax doesn't do the trick, start with a cleaner, then polish, and finally wax. Then again, most mass-market automotive waxes include a cleaner, which removes the dead paint from the surface. A cleaner/wax alone is probably fine to use on an old factory paint job unless it's losing its shine, which requires polishing.

I've had good luck with Meguiar's three-step system (clean, polish, wax), but have also used Griot's Garage stuff with their random orbital polisher. Looking to try some Mother's products because they sponsor Formula One races commercial free on ESPN2.

Hi Snoots,,,,,this is a new one on me, I am intrigued, please explain in more detail how you use this. Do you wet it with something and turn it into a paste? Do you rub it on dry? Do you apply with a rag or foam polishing pad?

Would have to be harder than the coating or does friction just BURN the paint coating off ??

On vehicles that do NOT have a clear coat, use YOUR favorite brand of cleaner, wax and/or polish. Should you use a foam or buff type on the final and you see swirl marks use a 100% cotton rag and dust it with corn starch (dry). Lightly hand buff and you should see the swirls disappear.
If you use '100% rags' be certain that you cut the edges off. They are usually sewn with polyester thread.
Polyester bad.
100% cotton good.

I've never tried it wet or with a foam pad. Microfiber sucks.
