I'm thinking about purchasing a used Edelbrock 1406 for my 84 k10. Some of you may remember me asking questions about rebuilding my quadrajet a few months ago. Well I did the rebuild, and while I think I did everything right, I'm still not having a lot of luck with my truck running right. When I stomp the gas the transmission kicks down and the rpms go up, but the truck floods out and will die if I don't let up on the gas. I'm done trying to figure this out.

So now I'm going to be purchasing a "like new" Edelbrock 1406 carb and use an adapter to put it on my stock intake. Since I'm buying this carb used I won't be getting all of the original hardware. What will I need to hook my transmission cable to it? I've heard horror stories about the transmission cable being wrong and it wrecking the transmission. I just spent $1200 getting my tranny rebuilt, so what do I do to keep it from hurting my transmission?

I'm guessing you have a 700R4 with the TV cable. Here is a quick adjustment guide. http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/instructions/700r4 cable adjustment instructions.pdf
Honestly, I've had nothing but bad luck with Edelbrock carbs trying to work on anything not stock and having it jetted correctly when you get it for your motor. Much better luck with Holley on my trucks, although I prefer a new quadrapuke anyday over a holley. If you're running a 305, honestly think a good 2 barrel would work better than a quadrapuke or a 1406, unless your'e motor really hopped up, they are just too much carb for it. Something around 500 cfm should work good.

I just want my truck to run correctly. I'm sick of how it's been running. Every time I try to get somebody to take a look at it they just say to ditch the quadra-junk because it'll never run right. (obviously they're wrong because they ran from the factory.)

So you're saying it won't run correctly with a 1406 on it?

No, you can make it work. Just my opinion that they are my least favorite carb to try to tune. Just curious, is the quad you rebuilt stock to your truck so that the jets, needles, and hanger are for your motor? I'm guessing you have electric choke on the quadra jet, sometimes they will run like that if you don't have secondary air door adjusted right.

As far as I can tell the quad is completely original to the truck. I want to remove every vacuum line except for what the truck needs to run. I absolutely hate how crowded the engine bay is. I've already removed the non-functioning A.I.R. system and the EGR.

I don't care if the truck runs like a beast, I just want it to run correctly. It also seems to be leaking gas onto the intake manifold near the carb, but I have no idea why. There's a chance it's oil, I'll have to check it closer.

I'm out looking at my truck again and I might have found the issue with flooding out.

If my secondary butterfly valves (the ones on the bottom of the carb) were just barely opening, like 1/16" of an inch with the gas pedal floored, would this cause my truck to flood?

I can actuate them freely by hand, but when I actuate my throttle linkage on the carb by hand they don't open either. I can't make them open unless I crank down on the linkage way too hard. They're not sticking on anything, but they're not being actuated like they should be. I'll attempt to take a video.

I've been thinking all evening, I think I'm going to attempt to get my quadrajet going. I'm uploading a video to imgur so I can show what it's doing. I think the fingers that open the secondaries at the base of the carb are bent out of alignment. I'm going to try to bend them back into place and see if that fixes some of my problems.

I bought a brand new 1406 and a manifold from edelbrock and its been amazing. The electronic choke is amazing, too. The only adjustment I needed to make was idle speed, and I just turned it up about half a turn to get it where I liked it.

Edelbrocks are nice, but Holley. If you get one you'll wonder why you ever messed with a quadrajunk.

Here's a short video of what it's doing. When you see the secondaries open all the way I'm really cranking on the throttle linkage or I'm just opening them by hand the second time.

I know absolutely nothing about Holley's

The third time you rotated the throttle linkage all the way and they seemed to open almost all the way. You might need to fiddle with the metal tabs on the secondaries to get 100%.

The choke plate on the primaries doesn’t stay closed at operating temp, does it?

As far as I can remember the choke opens properly. When they opened all the way the third time I had to really crank down hard on the throttle linkage. I'm thinking I need to bend the metal tabs to make it open earlier. When should they open? Should they be 90° at the same time as the primaries? Or a little later?

It's a progressive linkage, so the primaries open before the secondaries. It "kind of" looks like it's working properly in the video but your description seems like you're concerned about the amount of effort. A TV cable on a 700R4 has a fair amount of resistance so don't let that fool you if it's hooked up. And yes, you need it to be correct or the transmission will fail.

As someone else described, you need to get someone else in the cab to mash the pedal while you look to see what's happening in the carb. Also, look for that accelerator pump shot when they first step on it.

And, don't listen to the haters. Quadrajets are great carbs, especially on a stock application.
