The Bracket (rod) from the transfer case to other attachment bolt is gone< removed starter to find bolt location, Not a good location for a bolt, Installed a smaller one now its gone 5,000 or so miles later. Does any here know the correct bolt and torque values? Probly should use some Blue Locktight

The bar connects to a bellhousing bolt so if you're losing them, that's a real problem. Definitely use some blue Loctite.

That said, the bolt is a 3/8"-16 but I'm not sure on the length (probably 1" to 1-1/4" long). A lot of trucks just have a regular bolt but I think (at least some) originally had a "stud" (for the lack of a better description) with a nut made on it part way down so it held the trans separate from the second nut that held the bar.

Hey nvrenuf, I'm missing the same bolt on my '86 and see the size you listed above. My question is the head just a common head with a lock washer or does it have a different style head?

not all transfer case and engine combos and trans combos got braces. what is your t case, engine, and transmission

Are you talking about the stud for the bar? If so, it’s been a while but it seems like the nut was a flange type with the serrated underside that acted as a lock washer.

not all transfer case and engine combos and trans combos got braces. what is your t case, engine, and transmission
1986 Chevy 1'2 ton 350, Manual 4 speed and a 208c transfer case. It has the support bracket on the T-case that goes up to the bell housing bolt or stud, I'm not sure what was supposed to be there.

Doing some work have that bar off. It's an 81 K20 350 V8, 350 auto if the same. Rear holes are slotted, start bolt in slots then tighten at the motor then go back and tighten at TC. Blue loktight won't hurt but really look it over for something else loose. Rather uncommon for one to fall out that quick if installed correctly.

You should not need to pull the starter.

No need to pull the starter as John mentioned. I "was" using a standard 3/8-16 hex head bolt. It was 1/4 inch longer than the rest of them to account for the thickness of the rod. Never had an issue. Then I swapped to a 4500 and 205 t-case and the rod doesn't fit anyway. There has been a LOT of discussion on whether that rod and/or the t-case to frame (older versions) make any difference. If I had it and it fit, no harm using it otherwise I wouldn't give a rip. Now that I have said that I expect my tail housing will break off on the way home from work today and leave my t-case lying on the freeway. :shrug:
