We've discussed this a fair amount on some of the builder sites and forums and honestly your towing capacity is legally limited to whatever the GVWR rated capacity of the vehicle is. If you have upgraded the engine, and drive-train it does not increase the strength of the frame or it's capacity to haul, tow, etc etc and that is what determines your tow rating in the grand scheme of things.

Imagine taking your k30 4x4 crew cab and doing a Cummins swap with all the accouterments and finding out you are still only allowed to tow the limit of your k30 chassis. That is what guys are running into now though, so just to inform you that if you go beyond the legal limit you will suffer the wrath of the police if they suspect you are running heavy or overloaded.

It probably varies by state, but as far as a commercial vehicle in Ohio goes, you can simply buy a higher weight rating.

Ah, your right. I didn't think about that. Here in NC I think if you exceed the weight limit, you purchase a "weighted" tag.
My dad has one on his 2500HD duramax.

This is what the law says

Private, noncommercial pickup trucks, registered with regular “First in Flight”-type license tags, may trailer a combined total load of up to 9,000 pounds. If the total is heavier, a weighted license tag is required with enough capacity to cover the entire combined load of the truck, anything carried in the bed of the truck, the passengers of the truck, the trailer and whatever is being carried on/in the trailer.
So if you have a 6,000-pound truck pulling a 1,500-pound trailer carrying a 4,000-pound boat, then you need a weighted tag because the combined weight (11,500 pounds) is more than 9,000 pounds. If the towed load is heavier than 10,000 pounds a class A drivers license is required. For towing less, a class C license is fine.

So In saying, as long as what I'm towing doesn't exceed 9k, and I have a weighted tag I'm safe.
Apparently if the truck is 50k, and the trailer load is only 1k, I can drive with a regular tag.

And in regards to towing with your 700R4, sure you can, but I would add an Aux cooler to deal with the extra heat.

The weighted tag thing seems to be simply a grab for tax dollars. Many modern trucks would be limited to about a 1000-1500 load without one.

The 700r4 was never meant to be a heavy duty trans, they were designed in the late 70s and implemented in the early 80s behind 150hp v8s. most 700r4s are rebuilt by people that think they know how to build one but do bad things to them and they blow up quickly. You would be better off switching to a 4l80 or th400.

Thankfully, where there's socialist laws on towing, there's no laws on lift, tire size, engine size, or whatever else.
There's just the headlight height, and they don't enforce that [emoji16]

For now. Wait until they figure out they can make a buck on it.

I figure the 700 might give out, it's just my luck. She's been sitting for 5 years, I got her fired up, got the slime and sludge all pumped thru the trans, she goes in all gears, as a little driving around the property went on, it shifted better and better, but boy was it retarded when it came to downshifting.
Get up to 3rd gear, then get down to 10 mph
After a brief delay
"thud...... Thud...."

Gonna change the filter and fluid, but it's been my experience, once you pour the "pixie dust" out, it don't wanna act right anymore
