Just a general question, but do aftermarket products such as headers, carbs, exhaust, and distributor effect the timing of the engine?

Distributor stock or aftermarket has total affect on you timing. By turning the distributor one way or the other will advance or retard your timing. The others will not affect the timing, although timing may help the others perform better.

How do I know which way to turn? My issue is that the truck pops when I am coasting at higher speeds.

Year, engine, and transmission? Is it CA emissions? Do you have a timing light?

to start you will need a timing light. then you can hook it up to the #1 spark plug wire and shine it shine it at the timing tab. when you rotate the distributed you can watch it move.

loosen the hold down tab on the distributer a little so you can move it with a little bit of resistance. you don’t want it all the way loose.

also the timing lights that you can adjust are a lot better than the ones you can’t but there a little more money.

Most parts stores will rent or sell them. I'm not sure if there is more to do on your year but on my year it just like what @climb-101 said above.
