Back to working on the 1981 C10 truck. When purchased, the spare tire was just tossed in the bed. I finally paid some attention to the rear under the bed. Appears that I have no spare tire carrier:

Just a busted and bent stud: (and a bad exhaust pipe hanger)

the owners manual shows the "glide out" type of mechanism, and the parts vendors I investigated show a "standard" carrier and the "glide out" carrier. Any idea what I should have had originally? Perhaps the in bed stand up tire holder is better? Thanks for comments

Installed this one from LMC truck, very happy with it:

The glide out carrier was an option, so if your truck had that it would show on the RPO sticker. The bed carrier is better for your back. It does steal room from the load area, and if you get a flat with the bed loaded, you may need to remove the load to get it.

Same one I put in my 84. I was thinking of an underbed mount, but then got to thinking. What if I have to change my tire in the rain or miserable type weather? I don't want to be laying in the water, mud etc.

How has this LMC tire mount held up?
I'm pondering getting the same one for my '83 K20, but I'm afraid of getting weak, wobbly garbage.

Still like it. 24" of snow melted out of the truck bed over the last week and it is there just like I installed it.

I did flip over the center angle iron bar so the horizontal leg is up to deflect rain, sloped to get good runoff. I also put a lot of antiseize on the center threads and nut, then covered the exposed threads with a bit of rubber hose to keep rain and dirt off. So far so good! I recommend this, definitely not weak nor wobbly.

It will be very sturdy. Considering that a bungee through the rim (if your rim has holes high enough, attached to the bed rail lip, or a single bolt drilled through the bed rail lip and snugged up on a lug hole will hold a tire fine, this mount is very sturdy.
