Pretty sure DD is right on that too. You can use a NV4500 Bellhousing, or take the current SM465 bellhousing to a machine shop and have it opened up a bit. Seems a couple members on another forum did that and it worked fine.

HotRodPC do you know how much machine work was required? Did the sm465 bellhousing bolt to the nv4500 after the bearing retainer was enlarged?

Pretty sure the bolt pattern is the same. Just need the bellhousing to be bored to accommodate the nv4500 bearing retainer.

DD is correct. IIRC, it's approx 1/8 inch that needs machined from side to side, so all total, taking 1/16 of an inch off all the around the circle will get you the 1/8 inch side to side, top to bottom. Best thing to do is measure both the SM465 that came out and then the NV4500 going in to be sure.

I had a hydraulic bell housing for a sm465 here at the yard going yo have it machined and see how it works. The bell housing is aluminum can I get a cast one?

the bolt patterns for the tranny to the bell housing are different

the nv4500 will not bolt to the sm465 bell housing

the nv4500 pattern is wider than the 465

people have made it work but I have not liked any of the ways they have done it

I have done a nv4500 swap in my 85 with a 208 and I am doing another with a 205 in one of my 1 tons

the orange bell housing is the advance adapters nv4500 bell housing it has dual bolt patterns for the 465 and the nv4500 so you can see how different they are

the other bell housing is a 85 up square body bell housing for the 465

I can handle redrilling a sm465 bell housing better than buying a new one or a lift kit

there is not space to redrill the nv4500 bolt pattern on a sm465 bell housing

I have seen the cast iron bell housings from older trucks with a bunch of crap welded on them to make them work.

and I have seen a thread where a guy drilled and tapped the sm465 bolt pattern into a nv4500 and put the bolts threw the bell housing into the nv4500.

really when you have to replace a nv4500 because you were trying to save a few bucks on a bell housing and you destroyed a nv4500 ask yourself if the 366 bucks and a advance adapters bell housing would of been a better way to go

I figured I saved money and time instead of hacking together a bell housing that will not be right and possibly could destroy my nv4500. I just bought the nv4500 one from advance adapters.

I have used the factory nv4500 bell housing with 6'' lift
