Cked nuts and bolts over and over. Hope I didn't forget something. Headed to Las Vegas(700 miles one way) to race at the Street Car Super Nationals. Headed out at 6am tomorrow. We'll see how good it does. Driving around with and without the trailer have been encouraging that it won't break the bank in gas. Will put up some pics along the way. YooHoo

Breakfast in Likely CA

Rest stop for breakfast in a spot in the road town on 395 south of Alturas CA. Decent little café.

Pressed on to Fallon NV where we stopped for the night. Went 328 miles and averaged 10.4 mpg which included stopping in Reno at Summit racing and a couple of other places. Loaded trailer and truck. Speed was 55-60 in CA at 16-1700 rpm. 65-70 in NV at 2000-2100 rpm. Engine/trans did a good job. Rarely shifting out of overdrive. Had to be a fairly steep grade before shifting(3-4%). Currently pulling a 3.73 gear. Now on to the casino to leave a few bucks there.

Always great to see a square doing what it was built to do. Looking forward to seeing more photos and hearing about the adventures!

That seems to be a popular speed to RPM match up with most modern vehicles. That's exactly the rpms vs speeds my Magnum turns.

Sunrise over the Nevada desert

Just outside Fallon NV on hwy 95 south. This was going to be the part of the trip that would show any faults in the truck. Mostly uphill starting at about 3000 ft to Tonopah NV at 6500 ft(190 miles). Was running 65-70 all the time. Trans did quite a bit more shifting to keep the speed up. Overall I was pleased with the performance of the engine and trans. Fuel mileage took a hit as expected but still manages 7.8 over that time(acceptable considering the weight and speed)

Hawthorne NV

Pic of old glory in Hawthorne NV. Stopped for a bite. Best known for the ammo storage for the Army/Navy. Bet this town was on Japan radar to blow up during WW2. If it blew up half the west coast might be gone. Storage building for miles around. Boom

Running down the road pulling a load

Drag racing on my mind. Dash was supposed to be new but since it didn't fit back in went the old. Video taken about 100 miles north of Vegas. Road mostly down hill or flat with a few hill enough to make the trans shift down. Mileage back up to 10.5 mpg. Got to the track and unloaded the car to go through tech inspection. Now for a couple of days of fun before the Race.

Freemont Street Vegas

For the people who have never been to Vegas, Freemont street experience is an must see place. Several blocks of music, weird people, and gambling. Plus the overhead show you got to see to believe. Here is a couple of pics of what to expect.

G rated picture

Racing

On the racing side this week sucked. Broke the trans input shaft on the first pass on Thursday. Spent Friday pulling the trans and installing the new shaft. Got it together and found out the engine was hurt when it over revved when the shaft broke. Done for the week. Headed out early in the am and we will give the engine/trans another workout. 14hrs straight thru.

That's a bummer, but then, that's racing for ya! Hope all goes smoothly on the trip home!

I have made that trip several times in the past couple years. I dont think these guys understand the ammo cash Hawthorne has, maybe you could snap a picture of that insane **** going the other way. All I remember about that place is the view of thousands of bunker type buildings scattered all over a valley and the rail road depot in the center.

I was just looking at my summit racing parts tracker and it looks like my boxes from mentioned store in Sparks departed Tonopah this morning. My parts might be passing this guy in a ups truck in the opposite direction.
